I swear, part of the fun I'm having with this is playing 'spot the movie swipe' in some scenes.

Some are VERY subtle, some are so 'in your face' one can't help but laugh at the sheer balls of the producer.

Nope. And I've watched a lot of war films. Closest looks to be a scene from "Battle of the Bulge" where the tank commander addresses his men who break out into song. Other than that, you got me. Then again, I can't understand Japanese so I have no idea what they are saying.

Nope, nope, you got it.

Of course it's not an EXACT rip, just as the 'spinning Yamato' shot in episode 14 isn't an exact rip of the movie 2010 (altho that whole scene is pretty darn close!) or the trial of General Domeru in episode 17 is only a faint pass of the Trail of Zod from 1978's Superman.

In that clip, the issue is one of Domeru's officers is disparaging, doubtful of a group of 'second class' Gamilas, feeling they didn't have the true heart, spirit needful, even questioning loyalty. And I'm not sure but I'm getting a feeling that the men assigned to Domeru are all 'scrapings from the bottom of the barrel'- old men, kids, that sort of thing. Expendables.

I dunno about you, maybe it's just because that similar scene in 'Battle of the Bulge' is so memorable to me, and knowing what's about to happen when Yamato goes up against Domaru's attack group, this little clip sent chills up my spine. Thrill of anticipation. That sort of thing hasn't happened in YEARS for me.

I don't have nearly the film background to spot all the little riffs that are doubtless used in Yamato 2199, but Izubuchi seems to have a similar taste in film so who knows. I'm highly confident I'm the only one here who even knows a movie like, say, 'Z.P.G.' even exists let alone there's a scene 'borrowed' from it.

And then of course there's all the 'internal' riffs, where scenes from Yamato 2 and Yamato III are introduced. That's an entire other thing.

Yeah, I caught the Superman connection too. No doubt if I go back and rewatch the earlier episodes I'll catch some other things.

OK, so as I mentioned in the "What are you watching" thread, I've finished the show. I have a few questions, since I couldn't see the show with subtitles:

So what's the deal with Yuria, the super cute girl? I thought she got possessed by a ghost or something in one episode. She seemed like she'd become mischievous and evil, but then she seemed to be perfectly normal after that. Again, I'm missing the subtitles.

Why did Deslar shoot that pointy-eared chick, whom he raised as a daughter or whatever? Did she just surprise him? And why'd he not just kill Koudai? Was it because he regretted killing that one girl, who then shoots him, so he spared Koudai and Yuki?

I'll need to re-watch this with proper subtitles. The level of English ain't exactly Orange Road junior high, so much of the dialogue is a level above my Japanese understanding.

The blu-ray subtitles are very good. When you get a chance, watch the series with subtitles.

She was possessed by the psyche of the girl in the chamber that was loaded before they left Earth. Once they free her from the sleep chamber she doesn't need to possess Yuria anymore.

The pointy-eared chick was so happy to see him that she sent out a massive empathic wave. He reacted too quickly. Why didn't he kill Kodai - Typical villain, gloating and monologing.

Ah, thanks! With it being months in between volumes because Tsutaya was slow to buy more, I'd forgotten what had happened. I vaguely remembered an episode in which the Yamato was haunted by a ghost or something, and it possessed Yuria. Without subtitles, I couldn't understand what had happened. Thanks!

I have renamed this thread to be more appropriate, since "not too excited about Yamato 2199" no longer applies. This show is much to be excited about! I just re-read the first few of my posts on this thread from a year ago. While I was disappointed that Matsumoto's character designs were changed, they still do remain rather faithful. A good example is Sanada's unique eyes. Unfortunately, Matsumoto can only draw one style of eye for female characters. The change is good, because it allows the original Yamato to be distinct and easily recognizable. There's a word I am looking for, but it's not coming to mind.

So I think I am up to episode 20 or so as of this past weekend. This show is so extremely cool. I noticed when the enemy fighters were launching from their carriers, they dip below the flight deck for a bit before lifting. I noticed this in the original, and I understand that this was because they were watching old WWII footage and wanted to match that "realism" without stopping to realize that there is no gravity in space. (D'oh!) I didn't notice this the first time I watched 2199, but I caught it this time.

I am understanding quite a lot more with subtitles, like when Yurisha began to possess Misaki and when she stopped. All that went right over my head. When I first saw it, I thought that Misaki had become possessed by that Gamilus witch who used her telepathy to put a spell on the crew of the Yamato. When she went brain dead, I thought maybe her consciousness had taken up rent in Misaki's mind.

I've read that a feature-length film will be released this fall. I'm tempted to go see it just for the experience, but I imagine that it'll just be a truncated version of the TV series. I'm curious if they come up with something less-predictable. I'm hoping that Yamato II will be remade. Seeing the Gamilus fighting the Comet Empire in 2199 was a great tease for the potentiality of another show. Maybe they'll call it Yamato, Operation: Cameltoe or soemthing.

As they say, about time and welcome aboard!

So you know, the upcoming movie is NOT a mixdown of the 26 episodes, it's an entirely new film. Nobody, NOBODY knows what it's going to be about. Izubuchi has said in any number of interviews that he wanted to do a movie about the Battle of Mars, where Okita somehow managed to hold the line and beat the Gamilas back to the outer system.

But this may not be the case. It may be a 'side story' taking place during the journey to Iscandar, or a "meanwhile, this happened" or, well, just about anything.

I think it's safe to believe it will involve the Yamato and the crew.

On the carriers, if you watch again, the fighters don't dip when they launch, only the heavy torpedo bombers and the drill missile carrier dipped after launch.

And it's completely possible that one of Domeru's carriers survived. We see it dip into a nebula but we never see it explode. That could be interesting.

One thing about Yamato's fighter launch system, did you notice that we've never actually seen the Cosmo Falcons being retrieved/landing? The Type 100, the Seagull and the Zero? Yep. Not the Falcons. I can't even figure out how it would work and that's after pouring over the model sheets for hours and hours. I think they may have just 'handwaved' that difficult thing away.

I should clarify. I'd mentioned this in the other thread. This is my second time watching this show through. It's only now that I was sent the fansubs by a kind member of another forum that I am now watching this show with subtitles and getting much more out of it. The first time through, I watched it with my wife and kid during dinner, so it didn't get my undivided attention. Now I am watching it on my laptop and getting far more out of the show.

A side story would be what I am hoping for. Like the first LOGH movie or the Cowboy Bebop movie, (or even the Cardcaptor Sakura movies,) side stories are best for anime movies. Macross:DYRL excepted, I tend to not care much for retellings of the same story. Edited and remanufactured movies don't have much appeal either, such as with the Zeta Gundam movies and the happy ending that was tacked on.

So yeah, a prequel or a side story would be fantastic. And a remake of the second series would be incredible! I never saw Yamato III or Final Yamato, but I am sure there are some good ideas in those shows that can be reworked to be better (just as long as Captain Okita stays dead this time!).
