Listening to The Smith's - Best of the Smiths, Vol. 1

The B-52's "Rock Lobster"

I don't know how many times I have to repurchase Depeche Mode soundtracks. From wearing out to the cassette tapes, to the CD player scratching up my CD's and now on digital... but "Depeche Mode - The Singles 86>98" is just one of those albums that is just worth owning!

Sudden urge to listen to "Blue Monday", even though it's Tuesday. But yet had to also listen to "Bizzarre Love Trangle" and "True Faith".

And yes, during work today, I have been listening to more music from The Cure with "Inbetween Days" on constant repeat (from their album "Staring at the Sea - The Singles".

Wow! Aside from The B-52s, you and I have identical tastes! The Ocean Blue is my favorite band of all time, ever since 1992 when I heard "Ballerina Out Of Control." Did you know that TOB has released a new full-length album? I wrote my impressions of it here. 2013 has been the year for long-dormant bands to release new albums: The Ocean Blue, My Bloody Valentine, Man... Or Astroman? Lots of great stuff this year!

There is a band from The Philippines called Moscow Olympics that I can only describe as a mix between New Order, The Ocean Blue, and Pet Shop Boys. I wrote about their album here... released on a Japanese record label, Happy Prince.

My most recent albums I've bought are:
Echo & The Bunnymen: Crocodiles
Shonen Knife: Osaka Ramones
Man... Or Astroman?: Defcon 5...4...3...2...1

I bought Ocean Blue's album when I first heard "Between Something and Nothing" on KROQ or saw the the video when MTV had an alternative hour... But I loved the song (and also "Drifting Falling") and purchased several of their albums since then. Haven't got the new one but need to get it. Never heard of Moscow Olympics, will need to give them a try.

Justin Timberlake - 20/20
Jon MCXRO - The Fifth of Never

These are what I usually listen to when not listening to soundtracks or Asian music.

I like a lot of different types of music. I like alot of the 80's music. I have Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, Culture Club, Simply Red, Art of Noise, Human League, Tenna Marie, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, and Genesis on CD. I also have a lot of 90's music like Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Blur, Puddle of Mudd, Third Eye Blind, Smash Mouth,The Fugees, 2Pac, Bjork, Radiohead, the Cardigans, Air, Smashing Pumpkins, No Doubt, Portishead, and Fiona Apple. I got some classic rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Otis Redding, Steppenwolf, Rolling stones, John Lennon, the Beatles and the Clash. I am big into movie soundtracks. I have a Bernard Herman movie soundtrack collection. I have soundtracks for Fiddler on the Roof, Sound of Music, Kingpin, Kill Bill, Taxi Driver, Star Wars, and the King and I.

Now that I am into playing the cello, I want you to have a look at what I got on my newer Album acquire:

I used to get people all the time telling me that I looked like Billy Corgan. People would even do double takes. I really don't get it, since even when I was thinner, I don't think I looked like him that much. I've met people who said they've seen him in-person and said that Billy Corgan was a jerk in real life, even to his own fans. That's unfortunate.

Wow. Depeche Mode, New Order, the Cure, Pet Shop Boys. Those guys were my bread and butter for most of my life.

My favorite, though, was always Erasure. The same kind of music as above, but they never got quite as popular. I think Erasure's stuff was much more melody driven than everyone else's, which was why I liked them so much.

Over the last few years I've developed a new appreciation for A-Ha. They're considered a one-hit wonder, even though they had about three hits in the US (Take On Me, The Sun Always Shines On TV, and Living Daylights). But their first three albums are full of good songs. Their recent stuff is pretty good too.

I'm also a fan of stuff like Def Leppard, Poison, and Van Halen.

The 80's just had shitloads of fantastic pop music.

I don't even bother trying to argue with people who fail to realize this or to try to convince them they're wrong. I was really into Erasure, too. I had bought most of their albums on audiocassette, but I never got around to replacing them on CD. "And they covered up the sun until they birds had flown away..."

I never cared for Def Leppard and the likes. I grew up calling them "hair bands." I don't know if that was just an Arizona term, or if everyone calls them that. My favorite remains the post punk/new wave music. Sometime soon, I want to buy the movie/documentary "Urgh! A Music War" on DVD.

I really like Erasure's Wonderland, Circus, and Innocence albums. I can take or leave Wild. Chorus and I Say I Say I Say were pretty good too. The Albums after that sounds less and less like Erasure to me.

What about OMD? They were my first favorite band when I was like 10. I really like Secret, Tesla Girls, and Hold You. Oh and If You Leave, from the Pretty in Pink soundtrack.

Also can't forget the Thompson Twins. King for a Day, Doctor Doctor, If You Were Here, and Hold Me Now are all great.

I also liked Book Of Love. Remember their song Boy?

One of the coolest little-known bands of the 80's was Cause and Effect. Check out their songs Another Minute and You Think You Know Her.
