The Lucky Finds bragging thread

The roughly mid-90's and earlier (generally pre-Toonami, pre-anime boom) era of anime & manga fandom: early cons, clubs, tape trading, Nth Generation VHS fansubs, old magazines & fanzines, fandubs, ancient merchandise, rec.arts.anime, and more!

<copied from my FB>

One of the first, and costliest anime purchases I made was the Nadia: Perfect Collection LD set, back in 1992 - Just over 600 USD (plus postage) at that time. I was in love with 'The Secret of Blue Water' - and still am.

However, I had to part with the set when I went to Uni in 1994 (as it was worth more than I paid, and those bills kept coming) and, while I made do with VHS till 2001 and got the DVD set then (as well as the Blu-Rays recently) I still missed the old set.

I never looked for it, as I imagined it would be worth a metric ton by now...

HAH!

500 yen - complete. Not a scratch on any of the ten disks.

Five bucks..... And they play like a charm.

I don't say this to impress - that's not the point. It is almost sad to see that sort of depreciation. Not uncommon. Just sad...

Here's my latest haul from Half Price Books from last weekend.

The one piece from the haul I am most excited about is the Dragon Half soundtrack/drama CD I found for $4! It still has all the inserts, and it's completely legit, and not a bootleg. There's a little mini comic inside by Ryusuke Mita about the making of the Dragon Half OAV. This is really special because at my second anime convention during a dating game, I sang "Watashi no Tamagoyaki" in front of everyone when one of the questions asked was to serenade the bachelor. LOL

NOT PICTURED is the Venus Wars original soundtrack my friend scored for $15!!! And also not bootleg. Listened to it on the way home, at least I'll get a copy of it, but I was so eyeballing it the whole way home.

Holy crap that is awesome! And even though I've seen Japanese manga at HPB I'm honestly shocked there was a Dragon Half CD there.

Sweet score on those Outlanders books! I love that series. I have them all, and all of Drakhuun, and at least the first two Caravan Kidd books. Johji Manabe is the man.

I got a recent swap in the mail (FINALLY, I initiated this swap over a month ago -__-). The Complete collection of Blue Seed:

(sorry for the crappy pic, lol)

I was surprised that they were so willing to give it up for practically nothing, but then I noticed that you can get the series used on Amazon for less than $5 at the moment, so maybe that's why. XD

During a college break back in the early 90's, I stopped in a (now long gone) comic book shop in the Ohio town where my grandparents lived. I asked the owner if he had anything "like manga" from Japan, which prompted him to look in a back room. He came back with a mint copy of the MACROSS PERFECT MEMORY book with poster

I pleaded with a relative to help me cover his asking price of $50. Since that unbelievable day I've had the good fortune to meet many convention guests that worked on MACROSS. See below for the signatures and old photos!

Wow, Macross Perfect Memory! That was the holy grail of Macross books. In high school, I had an older friend who had this book. IIRC, the poster was of the Macross from DYRL. I still have yet to buy this. I think I saw it at the Mandarake in Nakano when I was with Dave the year before last. One of these days, I intend to get this!

Having all those signatures is amazing. Very nice!

I paid about triple for a copy of the MACROSS Movie Gold Book, the one with the film strip.
Mikimoto is only smiling in the photo because I had the girl in front of me shoot it ;) It was the second day of autographs before he (reluctantly?) agreed to sketch Minmay for a small number of us. Ichiro Itano had a poorly attended panel, so I sat in every time and asked good questions. He thanked me and a friend by offering sketches of the Macross Zero valk head. I'm wondering if I should post my convention guest sketches here or in the thread about creators/artists?
