Technically this is sexual harrassment, but this is Japan and it's the early '90s to boot. Still, his inability to tell her to take a hike is annoying, and just creates tension with his relationship with Yawara.

Well, I think if the same were to happen in America, most of the time a complaint wouldn't be filed either. Especially if it's a guy being harrassed. Most guys are not going to claim sexual harrassment by a female colleague.

Yeah, and sexual harrassment can come from guys too. Even among hetero guys. I was fresh out of high school and working at a hot dog stand where one filthy homeless biker guy had the same shift as I did. That guy was raunchy and spoke of sex nonstop. It was unwelcome, so therefore it was harrassment. That guy had no class at all. I think eventually he got canned anyway, so problem solved.

Tonight we tackled the first 3 episodes of K-On! We'd rented the first DVD a few months back, maybe during the summertime. It had the first 2 episodes. This is my first time watching it with subtitles. My daughter is really eating this show up, too. This show is pretty fun so far. The girls aren't moeblobs, and although they are somewhat stereotyped, they aren't too stereotyped. We're certainly looking forward to the next episode.

Finally got a copy of the Captain Harlock DVD set. Watched the first 4 episodes. Quite entertaining...nobody does melancholic romanticism quite like Matsumoto and Rin Taro. I've always felt Rin Taro was the best director for Matsumoto stuff...Ishiguro is good, but Taro is better at mood and atmosphere.

I also had a chuckle at part of the summary on the back of the DVD set:

"A society where humanity has entered into sloth, concerned only that its entertainment remain uninterrupted."

Damn, we're screwed.

SteveH talked about the picture quality a while back, and I concur it is solid. However, don't expect anything on the level of Rightstuf's Rose of Versailles' stunningly awesome remastered video. Harlock is more on the level of the Votoms remastered sets from CPM a while back, or ADV's Gatchaman DVDs from a few years ago. It's a little soft in places and the colours aren't as vivid as RoV's remaster.

Also a little warning--the little flip holder for discs 3 and 4 has a tendency to latch onto the edge of disc 5 when flipping back and forth, so make sure you push down on disc 5 when turning the flip holder. It's not ideal, and is my biggest complaint about the set.

Yeah, Harlock was made way before The Jerry Springer Show ever came into being. How prophetic. So this is the one with the Mazone, right? I'm obligated to buy this DVD box set because I watched so much of the fansubs. IIRC, we didn't even finish the show because once it was licensed, fansubs ceased distribution on AnimeSuki.

Haha, I've been watching Harlock on the Crackle app lately and they go into that speech often before some episodes and it always makes me laugh.

I agree about Rin Taro. I love his Matsumoto work the best, I think. Even when the animation seems "dated", the direction and atmosphere he helps create is quite nice. One of my favorite things about the films he directed, too.

Just for fun, watched the two Bikkuriman movies. A little bit difficult to follow, but the various character designs are all interesting, at least...

Whoah, Bikkuri Man! That's a show I have heard of, but know nothing about. Incidentally, I own a Bikkuri Man game for the Super Famicom, but I couldn't figure it out much without the instruction manual.

So we were tearing it up with K-On over the weekend. Only one more DVD left! It's sad that it is only a 12-episode show, but I saw on Amazon that there is a followup show. It's a bit silly that Yui can pick up a guitar and become proficient just by being self-taught after a few months, but hey, it's anime, so maybe she's just a natural prodigy.

I want to say K-On has 26 episodes in all, plus the movie (which is basically an extended episode). I wonder if they'll ever animate the rest. (the 4-koma manga actually follows the main cast into college and shows their "successors")

I've heard the college episode strips are pretty bad. I think the anime ends at the perfect point, myself.
