the Yamato 2199 thread

There are thousands and thousands of people both here in NorthAm and Japan praying to every and all deities that there is a second TV series that uses Yamato 2 as a starting reference point. I think it would end up a vastly different show due to all the different ramifications hanging around from Yamato 2199.

Here's just one to ponder: What If the Yamato is the ONLY Warp-capable ship in the UNCF? What If Iscandar refuses to supply any more Wave Motion Engine cores (and it's something Earth Tech cannot duplicate)?

Aside from the Wave Motion Gun, the WME powers the Barrier and the Cannons which combined allow an Earth Ship to defeat a Gamilas ship. An Earth Fleet without Wave Motion powered technology would be completely helpless to a Gatlantis invasion. that's a pretty major plot change, huh?

Now with no Garmilas threat, they can reverse engineer the warp cores or salvage them from the floating base if anything is left from there. I'd like to see a side story on the Mars/Earth war. That might be fun. Also might like to know if they are going to try to colonize the planets that Garmilas abandoned? We'll just have to wait and see I suppose...

Well, as I said, we don't know that Earth science can reverse engineer the Iscandar WME core.

And I have this odd idea that Gamilas does things differently. Of course I'm taking that from the visual cue that Gamilas stuff tends to be reddish (beams, warp-in, blah blah blah), even their warp entry visual is slightly different. More 'pulse', less curly-cue exhaust.

So there may be no Gamilas core to salvage, it may not be as 'pure' a technology as Iscandarian WMe (Wave Motion Energy, I'm trying to start some new abbreviations), it may be 'Betamax'.

Or it could be that when a Gamilas ship suffers critical damage the warp engine self destructs. I could see that being a thing.

Then we have an additional complication. Starsha was REALLY unhappy that Earth had developed the Wave Motion Gun. Weaponizing WMe seems to cross some line, some ultimate taboo that may well have been a deep cultural issue with not only Iscandar, but Gamilas as well. Note that Dessler seemed to have not thought of a Wave Motion Gun until he saw that the 'Terons' had come up with it. Then he turned the famous Gamilas 'mad scientists' loose on it. But note again, it was reddish. Signifying 'not pure'? (I mean, the MAIN reason for the color differences is 'good guy/bad guy' stuff, I get that, duh, but our pal Izubuchi plays deep games. )

Of course the Iscandarian admonition against weaponized WMe may prove to go to the past, and taking a cue from Planet Shalbert (Yamato III) it may be Iscandar was once more warlike, much more aggressive, terrible wars with giant E.E. 'Doc' Smith style world, even whole solar system shattering weapons. Wouldn't that be interesting?

So, might 'Yamato 2201' feature an Andromeda that doesn't have Wave Motion Guns? Might Yamato be the only ship with a Wave Motion Gun? And at that, sealed as a compact of peace with Iscandar? That would sure complicate a battle with the Comet Empire, wouldn't it?

Did you miss the part that said that the weapon used to destroy the floating base was similar to one in development in the research labs on Garmilas? The alien female officer was stunned and couldn't believe it, so it seems the tech was known. The Dessler gun uses the same tech. Glad at least in this version of Yamato they have shields. It was always a stretch with the old one the amount of damage the ship could take without blowing up! Shields have been a mainstay in TV SF for decades now, so it was about time...

Okay, I finally finished re-watching 2199, just now. The fansubs really helped me to understand this show a lot more. I did understand that Koudai Mamoru's ghost is what triggered the Cosmo Reversal system to resurrect Yuki, but now I understand that his spirit was built into the system, thus explaining why his ghost was there. But unless I missed something a second time around, it still doesn't explain why Yuki has no memory from a year before, nor why she bears an uncanny resemblance to the princess from Iscandar. I eagerly await the movie! I hope it will explain more.

Would be great to have a sit down talk to explain some of this stuff that seems to defy logic or seems to be a loose end. But he is probably working on a new project and doesn't have the time.

Okay, I finally finished re-watching 2199, just now. The fansubs really helped me to understand this show a lot more. Yuki has amnesia caused by being caught in a car bomb explosion, the same explosion that put Yurisha in an apparent coma. This is a further hint there are people on Earth who fear all aliens and so on.

As to her looking like an Iscandarian, this has no official explanation, it may or may not actually mean something. I suspect it's a really deep thing, maybe implying that Earth was seeded with the same genetic 'core' as Iscandar, perhaps by the Aquarian civilization.

If you read the various interviews over at ourstarblazers.com you can see something change in Izubuchi. At first it was "Yeah, I've got maybe a movie in me but otherwise, I'm done" to "Yeah, you know, this is such an amazing team, we're all cooking so hot, I think it might be fun to keep going"

So, there will be TWO movies. The first is a 'cutdown' of the 26 episodes, akin to the original 'Space Cruiser Yamato' movie. This should be REALLY interesting to see, because I would expect some new footage worked in to smooth out the jumps and edits. It will be fun to see what the staff considers the 'core' of Yamato 2199, I predict we're going to lose a LOT of Gamilas stuff. I mean, duh.

As dynamic as the whole 'Kidnap Yuki and rescue her' subplot is, I think that entire arc could be dropped.

Anyway, the second movie is a completely original work. Nothing at all is known about the story, other than it's set during 2199 while the Yamato was on the way back to Earth.

For me at least, it's pretty exciting to have ZERO idea what's going to happen.

Yeah, can't wait til the 13th of May to find out what the side story movie will be about.

According to the flyer I was handed at this weekend's Shizuoka Hobby Show at Bandai's booth, the new movie will be released December 6th and be entitled (as I would translate it) Yamato 2199: The Star Patrol Ark. It says on the flyer, "On the return trip back to Earth, a yet unknown enemy is encountered, and its name is: Gatlantis!"

So that would explain why the upcoming models in the Mekakore series are three of the White Comet Empire Gatlantis starships. Apparently, they won't just be a cameo appearance in that one episode of the TV series!

Can't wait to see this movie when it hits theaters in December!
