Every evening, NHK airs a slew of brief childrens' anime shows that last only 10 minutes or so each. I guess it isn't that uncommon.

Well, they recently released the new character designs:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... ers/.78170

It looks like it'll be the first OAV's core characters...with EIGHT new female characters thrown in.

I can't say I'm a huge fan of the new designs. Out of all of them, Ryoko seems to be the only one who looks halfway decent (other than Tenchi, I guess). Everyone else looks really weird to me, and I'm ESPECIALLY not too thrilled with Sasami's new design (she's like 8 years old! Why does she have a shirt barely covering her crotch? I mean, I know her Pretty Sammy outfit had a short skirt, but the rest of the time she dressed fairly age-appropriately, I thought.)

It seems like the plot will be something along the lines of Washu doing something wrong, leading to Tenchi having to go "undercover" at a local school as a teacher for some reason. Hmm.

I have to admit, I'm liking the updated designs. I feel they're close enough to the originals without any drastic or unnecessary changes. My concern is, with all these new characters, how much screen time will be given to the old ones? Either way, as a fan of the original Tenchi shows, I'd definitely check this out.

I think for me, it's more of a style preference. They don't look BAD per say...I'm just not really digging them. (Also, I think Washu's new outfit makes her look even more short than she already is, which seems like an odd choice.) The designer also seems to have some weird liking of unusual stockings, lol.

That's what I was thinking, too--all these new characters aren't going to leave much time for the original ones in a show that's only 5 minutes long. I was hoping it'd be focused more around the original characters, but I guess they figured that'd be too boring? But all these new characters seem like way too much! I assumed they'd have maybe 1 or 2 new girls....not 8!

I'm also sad to not see any Kiyone. She wasn't in the original OAV, but I still liked her.

Saw the new designs the other day (totally with usamimi on the odd stockings thing...) and I wasn't super excited about them. Not really appalled either.

Still don't really get the point for all of the new characters for this project... Not really sure I want check it out. When they started expanding the cast for Ryo-oh-ki was my fast track to checking out.

New visuals were released: http://animenostalgia.tumblr.com/post/9 ... uyo-are-up

They look...slightly better than the rough designs? At least Sasami doesn't look as bad as before. I think the thing that really bugs me, though, is if you look at all the original girls side by side...they all have pretty much the exact same smile? http://33.media.tumblr.com/5d1972a30f1c ... 2_1280.png

Which sort of throws me off a little. And still...so many new female characters. Just...ugh. :/

I've been fairly vocal online about how I dislike the new designs. I think the are atrocious. I was seriously just laying in bed thinking about how bad they were days after I saw them. After seeing them all cleaned up I still don't like them (and yeah, what's up with that V smile?!).

I am not a fan of Suzuhito Yasuda's art, I think it's pretty ugly overall. Don't care for his clothing design or the way he makes his characters look. I honestly think they could have chosen a ton of other artists over him, but whatevs.

Yeah, I'm not really a fan, either. I just don't like that kind of style! I know that's what more current anime fans want, but I just can't get into it. :/ And not to mention the huge horde of new girls! I'm kinda dreading seeing the actual show. :?

I don't think I would have minded a bunch of new girls if the designs weren't so terrible. They are just really really ugly and un-appealing. I mean, at this point, they'd have been better off just making a new series, and removing Tenchi Muyo from the title. They don't look like any characters that would even exist in the universe, imo. Tenchi or not, these designs are kind of embarrassing for promoting tourism. "Hey here's some moeblob skimpy girls, come visit this part of Japan!" LOL Did they not wanna design a cute mascot like the rest of Japan? Or just have a normal anime set in the area with some more appealing designs without tagging along a beloved classic?
