Up where I am torrents are not safe and there are now many lawsuit happy companies out there. These companies are trying to get a civil case going so fines can be set by the courts. So far the ISPs are resisting these lawsuit happy trolls but its only a matter of time. This happened because of politicians that think helping US companies over Canadian citizens is a good thing.

I figured that was the case. A bit before my time as a fan. Fascinating...

I used to audio-record Monty Python, Star Blazers, SCTV, just to listen to later, back in the pre-VCR days. It was pleasant to listen to while doing homework or whatever, even if the more visual stuff is lost in the transition.

Come to think of it, I actually did do something similar, though not with anime -- I remember recording video game music onto audio cassettes...

Fortunately, I did so many years ago, and I've watched them both. I'd still love to own a commercial release, though.

Now that I live in Japan, I don't think I will download any torrents at all. Not with the way things are here.

Yeah, they can track down and arrest uploaders of materials, but can't track down the Kuroko's Basketball threat letter writer. He/she has shut down many conventions over threats to kill people at the event.

I'm a fan, but in my opinion Star Blazers was for its time a really well-done adaptation. The voice acting is great, they went through a lot of trouble to smooth over or re-engineer things like Japanese text and on-screen violence that in other shows would simply be cut, and they went to great lengths to preserve the spirit of the original - including the musical score.
Late to the party, but yes -- totally agree. The dub which is now some 25 years old is still better than most you see done today. :|
