Animag...why did they cease publication?

The roughly mid-90's and earlier (generally pre-Toonami, pre-anime boom) era of anime & manga fandom: early cons, clubs, tape trading, Nth Generation VHS fansubs, old magazines & fanzines, fandubs, ancient merchandise, rec.arts.anime, and more!

Thank you, there's some of the focus I lost. :)

Given how we mere fans aren't privy to the 'inside baseball' workings of the American anime companies except for what gets tossed out in various interviews, it's impossible to REALLY know how well dubbed VHS sold vs. Subbed VHS, but from what all I saw in my time in the trenches it was NOT 30-1 dub/sub. IN SOME VERY SPECIFIC CASES yes, like again Akira and Ninja Scroll and the other 'usual suspects' from back in the day. But the other tapes? Your Moldiver? Your Tenchi Muyo? Even Evangelion? I would say the sales ratio was more around 3-1 and again, I'm POSITIVE that something like 1/3 to 1/2 of those dub VHS sales are more a function of price rather than preference. I bought the dubs of a number of the Pioneer releases simply because they were cheaper. As time progressed I COULDN'T buy the subbed VHS version of some titles because the companies pretty much gave up pushing them in the solicitations and retailers NEVER GOT THEM IN. Never ordered them. They didn't exist to the retailers. Blue Seed. Evangelion. Nadia. Outlaw Star. City Hunter.

But how the companies did a terrible job of pushing their titles is a subject for a different thread. :)

I only bought a handful of commercially released items, so I shouldn't moan. Most of what was released commercially was available on LD in my area, and the scripts (oftened timed) were easily pulled down off of the Interne... errr... various BBS's around the world. So, I'd usually have SVHS or Hi8 when they weren't offered in anything better than VHS locally.

These days, even if their are fan-done subtitles I try to turn them off if I can, except for a few cases (Ghost in the Shell, etc.). Ironically, now that I don't need them, I watch almost nothing. :D
