The old-school anime DVD/BD news thread.

Lily Cat?! No freaking way! I thought that was a very well done Alien clone and would buy it on DVD in a heart beat.
Re: The old-school anime DVD/BD news thread.
Hmmm...maybe I should see about flipping the 5 sealed volumes I bought off a friend of mine a couple years back for cheaps! I do have a sealed vol. 7...SteveH wrote:Well, like all the OOP ADV stuff, prices are all over the place, with the later volumes (which got zero publicity and poor distro because of it) usually the most insanely priced.greg wrote:Is there any reason not to just get the ADV Gatchaman box sets? I've considered this. Did they replace the opening and ending credit titles with English ones, etc? Are some of them impossible to find, now that they are OOP?
Me, I finally got somewhat reasonable pricing on the final 3 box sets so that's at least one more series I was able to finish off. Dunbine Vol. 11 and 12 will be the death of me.
So, no, I can't think of any reason not to get the already existing Gatchaman DVDs. I strongly suspect the upcoming set will NOT have the bonus discs from the box sets which, on the whole, really weren't that special but I had to have them OCD blah blah blah.
Quick check on Amazon...yeah, the crazy pricing has hit. Box 7 is going for over $700. And those sellers can eat it.
Who knows, maybe Sentai Films will have a burst of common sense and sell the complete Gatchaman for under $50. That's a price that I suspect would fit in many folks comfort zone, for 105 episodes plus the OAVs. But somehow I don't think that'll happen. Call me a cynic if you must.
Never got around to watching them and probably won't. Just not enough time in the day...
Amazon has some crazy prices. VHS tapes running 10X what they go for on Ebay for starters. I wonder about some of the indie sellers...do they really think they are going to sell ANY of their stuff at such outrageous prices? Sheer nuttiness...
UPDATE
Prices on those box sets on Ebay are also pretty high! I could take a nice vacation by selling vol. 7 sealed for $500+. Ditto on the other sets. Then just wait for the reissue again and buy them again...
I really must think about this...

Well, just because Amazon or eBay has crazy prices doesn't mean people will actually PAY that much. I remember when Maison Ikkoku vol 8 was going for astronomical prices, I somehow got 2 copies, so I put mine on eBay thinking I'd get something good for it. I started it relatively low, and it sat there all 8 days with no bids until the very last second, 2 or 3 people bid a little against each other. I think I got $15 for it. XD
BUT, who knows? Gatchaman still has a pretty decent following, so it could be popular enough to go high.

Nah, I doubt it. I think occasionally, some fluke bid war may ensue, but who knows if it's genuine. Other sellers see the final sales price, and they expect to get that much for it. With just a straight bid without a buy-it-now price, such auctions rarely go that high.

Amazon, no. But Ebay...average for a used Vol. 7 is $200 - $500! That is nuts! Like I said, I should try to flip these since they will be reissued in High Definition anyway...

Keep in mind, "the value of a thing is that which someone will actually pay".
All those people sitting on Vol. 11 and 12 of Aura Battler Dunbine and asking $200 and up can just kiss my shiny old a**.
I honestly don't think ADV...er...Sentai is going to put much effort into this upcoming release of Gatchaman. I'd bet a donut they'll just do some shovelware upconvert for Blu Ray.

Exactly. That is why I had no qualms about downloading those volumes in .mkv format to finish watching the series. My wife and I watched the first 10 volumes straight, and we just had to see everyone get killed at the end. ADV isn't making any money from these overpriced auctions, so there is nothing on my part that would have helped them earn any extra money from me from that series.SteveH wrote:All those people sitting on Vol. 11 and 12 of Aura Battler Dunbine and asking $200 and up can just kiss my shiny old a**.

Yes, but see, for me it's not so much about finishing the series altho there is a piece of that. It's about the GAP. That two disc gap. Mocking me. Taunting me.greg wrote:Exactly. Even worse? I need I think 3 volumes of Outlaw Star on subbed VHS. Of COURSE I can buy the DVD sets (and I really should do that) but dammitall. Those tapes slipped thru my fingers because they came out during the transition years as Home Video finally accepted DVD as a valid format. Animevillage/Bandai never solicited the last few volumes on subbed VHS, only pushing the dubbed. It was FRUSTRATING.
Re: The old-school anime DVD/BD news thread.
I checked the bids on those discs and there were several people trying for them, so someone has money. But it's like looking at the people buying the robot toys out of Japan for many thousands of dollars per unit...someone is buying them because they want them bad. How bad would someone want a sealed 3 disc ADV Gatchaman vol. 7? There aren't any unless you want to shell out $1,500 USD for the full set that one outfit is selling. As to seeing if any of this is selling, I just check the completed auctions and when they were completed. All within the past 6 weeks or so...SteveH wrote:Keep in mind, "the value of a thing is that which someone will actually pay".

Re: The old-school anime DVD/BD news thread.
I suppose if I were stinking rich I wouldn't care about dropping crazy money for DVDs and other anime goodies.
but there's that value thing again. I do want Dunbine vol. 11 and 12, but not more than $30/disc, which is still $10/disc more than they retailed for. That's my value.
I entertain some nonsense thought of finding some video rental store, or comic shop getting out of rental, and buying the discs for like $5 each. Probably never happen, as a comic shop would surely be tapped into that 'crazy grandma pricing' mentality and slap a $200 sticker on it. And watch it sit, and sit, and sit...
