llj wrote:Yeah, Cyber City Oedo has a very late 80s sort of soundtrack (even though it's a 90s anime, I believe). Incidentally, I started watching the dub version this week just for kicks. Damn, it really is one of the most hilarious dubs I've ever heard.
Apparently the UK Manga Video's dub of Oedo was pretty good, with many people preferring it over the original, with a remade hard rocking soundtrack that fits the mood of the show better. You can find clips of it on YouTube.

I'm not of the opinion the UK dub's opening song to Cyber City is better. It's definitely not bad, but I didn't find the Japanese opening song that bad either, and it sort of has this "fugitives at the end of their rope" musical feel to it.

I can see better reasons for preferring Yello's opening song for the Space Adventure Cobra movie over the original Japanese, though I liked both in that case.

Well, I'm one of those annoying purist pricks that doesn't like changes being made to the original material. I really dig the updated soundtrack that Joe Hisaishi made for Laputa, especially since I realize that Hisaishi's earlier stuff in Laputa and Nausicaa was a bit lacking at times, but I still can't bring myself to listening to 20 something actors playing the roles of 10 year old kids in the English dub.

Yeah, there were some fans who were irked that later Disney re-releases of Laputa omitted the updated soundtrack.

I wish my DVD had a way of watching the movie with the original Japanese dialogue with the updated music... I have a feeling that it would have been VERY easy to "make it so," as Captain Picard would say.

I rented the first volume of Yatterman episodes from Tsutaya. According to Wikipedia, This anime came out in 1977; the year my wife was born. She doesn't know this anime, but her mom does. She keeps saying, "natsukashii!" ("Nostalgic!") I'm somewhat aware of the characters from the Time Bokan shmup video games on the Playstation and Saturn, as well as the Tatsunoko vs Capcom fighting game. Without subtitles, I don't really know what is going on, but watching the robot inventions trashing each other is fun. I love how Yatterman 1 and 2 fling their clothes up into the air, then turn inside out, and fall back on them when they transform to their costumes.

I used to love the stupid Timefighters vhs tapes they released in English when I was really little (I was probably like...4 years old?). I've always wanted to see the original Time Bokan, Yatterman, and all the related Tatsunoko series, they look awesomely whacky. XD

In the 80s, my mom worked at a video store, and this was one of the ones she ended up copying for me because I rented them like 10 times in 1 month after I discovered them, lol.

I'm seriously tempted to try to find video of it to see how awful it was. Considering the Harmony Gold team was behind it, I'm sure the dub was terribly cheesy.

I have the "Timefighters In The Land of Fantasy" volume a few feet from me if you need a copy...
