Thanks Kyrant! Yeah, I figured it was best to do an ep as spoiler free as possible, seeing as there's MANY people who still haven't seen it due to it only just recently being made available here. My hope is that if anyone has been on the fence about it, we maybe helped convince them to finally check it out! Maybe I can do a "spoilercast" in the future for it.

Kyrant wrote: Tue May 29, 2018 9:18 pm Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a very special series for me. Not only was it a huge part of my tastes changing towards more cerebral, character-driven stories, but I watched it almost literally right as I was starting college, so I associate it with some very big changes in my life. So I was really pleased to her it get such a good reflection on your podcast. You guys summarized basically everything I love about one of my favs. The overview was a good introduction to the series for the uninitiated and while I was a little sad that you didn't really get into the finer details of the series (although I completely understand why, you just can't without nosediving into spoilers with this show) there was still deep enough insight to get me looking at angles I hadn't really thought of before. So yeah, thanks so much for doing this, I enjoyed it and stuff!
Sounds like we both watched it around the same time. I watched it for the first time in my first year of college (about 5 years ago) and it really blew me away as well. I usually say it is hands down the best 100+ episode series I have ever watched and ever will watch.

The podcast episode really brought back some of the strong emotional reactions I had to the series. I had meant to rewatch it but I wanted to read the novels in Japanese before revisiting the anime. To summarize briefly, it is science fiction for adults so there's a ton of uncommon vocab in those books to pick up (I wrote a post on my blog on my process of studying prior to actually attempting to read these books; while I am finally ready to dive in I have yet to actually try because life's been busy).

Reading Legend of the Galactic Heroes had been one of my larger goals for Japanese study for a while now. Jokes on me considering all the grinding and studying I put into Japanese to find out they're just going to localize it officially. I am glad though that it's finally getting all this attention and love, as I've been aware of its history and reputation for quite some time before I got to it myself.

Congrats on the anniversary! On your rec I watched Dragon-Half for the first time, and realized I'd heard the ending song somewhere else -- possibly coming out of a video room at one of my first anime conventions. (^_^) I'm a fan of the character designs, although I think the animation director needed to put a bit more effort into keeping everyone on-model...

I wonder if anyone remembers it in Japan? I mean, I never would have expected a re-make of Magical Circle Guru-Guru, but we had one and it was good; a re-make of Dragon-Half would be interesting to see.

Ah thanks mbanu! Also thanks for reminding me to post here, I thought I already had...guess I've been so busy I just assumed. XD

I think it's one of those things that's way more fondly remembered here than in Japan, but I'm sure there were fans--the manga did get that wideban reprint, and there were at least 2 PC Engine games and 3 RPG books! Good point about Mahoujin Guru Guru--I think it'd be interesting to see a modern take on such a wacky old thing. (Though I'd hope they'd stick close to the art style the original anime used, because the manga art gets a bit too pointy and bug-eyed for me by the end of the series.)

New ep went up last week: a short ReView ep about a mashed together video game movie that's mostly still liked solely for its soundtrack...Tekken The Motion Picture!
