The Time Capsule

The roughly mid-90's and earlier (generally pre-Toonami, pre-anime boom) era of anime & manga fandom: early cons, clubs, tape trading, Nth Generation VHS fansubs, old magazines & fanzines, fandubs, ancient merchandise, rec.arts.anime, and more!

Oh man, I remember wishing I could go to that A-kon that Monkey Punch appeared. That seems like a lifetime ago!

AnimeiGOSSIP! omg! I used to have some of those back in the day, I totally forgot about them...

That A-Kon (#5) was actually my first A-Kon. (Monkey Punch went to an AnimeFEST more recently (like in the last 10 years IIRC)) Also, I went to the Katsucon mentioned in the AnimeiGOSSIP specifically for the purpose of trying to get in the OMG audition. I did not succeed, altho it was a great con. (we drove 26 HOURS from Texas to Virginia Beach for that one, blew a tire 1-2 hrs out of the con)

Looking at those flyers it also just depresses me that (most) cons don't do that anymore. Too many cons are focused on ROI and in many cases "chasing the next big thing". Back in the 90s many cons ran in the red, but they also were trying to appeal to anime fans. I hear too many con Orgs now say "that's not what the fans want anymore". I'm sorry, some people may disagree, but IMO if people don't "want" the anime creators then they're not ANIME fans.

We saw Monkey Punch at the 2001 SDCC. Rumiko Takahashi was there that time, too. We didn't sit in on the MP panel for very much. Just poked our heads in the door for a while. That was back before movie stars started showing up to the venue and you could actually just plop your backpack on the floor and stand against the back wall and watch a panel for a while, then leave. Now it's nothing but standing in line more than at Disneyland.

I would gladly help in maintaining the tumblr. I love using tumblr. :3

No sketch but autographed. Got this via a friend who is a big Tezuka fan when Tezuka was in Minneapolis.
