About ten years ago, I had done a "rent as much as you like in one month" membership with Blockbuster. I ended up watching more stuff than I normally would, thinking that I had to get my money's worth. The good that came out of that is that I got to watch the Ninja Scroll TV series. Other than that, I didn't like having to commit to a monthly plan.
You have to pay for a Hulu Plus account if you want to watch brand new shows the day after they're released OR if you want to watch stuff streaming onto your TV/Phone. They have tons of stuff to watch for free that's older if you watch it on your computer, though. (That's how I've been watching it, I have to wait until a week after the new eps were out to watch them once they went to "Free" mode).

On Tumblr, I actually made a list of all the older anime you can watch for free online legally, and Hulu by FAR has the biggest selection: http://animenostalgia.tumblr.com/post/5 ... aster-post
