I really need to check out this "Attack of the Titans" (Shingeki no Kyojin), from celebrities in Japan posting about it to fans in various countries going crazy for it! Whatever this anime is about...I need to give it a try and see what the hype is about!

Anyway, for new anime for the summer, Rocketnews did a feature on it:

Shingeki no Kyojin is good as an anime (as the art is a vast step up from the manga) but suffers a bit in pacing compared to the manga.

It's still on my watch list alongside Chihayafuru and Uchuu no Kyoudai.

I just marathoned a bunch of Natsume Yujincho the last few days. (Three seasons !!!)
Had started accidentally with "Shi" and stopped whenI found I could watch the older eps on Crunchyroll. Suppose I'll resume with that shortly...

llj wrote:That's interesting, Greg. What are your thoughts on those high school "call girls" that are often portrayed in Japanese movies? I'd say about 5/10 Japanese movies I've seen in the past 10 years have a scene where one of the female teenaged characters have some sort of "side job" hanging out with older guys for money. Is this overblown in Japanese pop culture, or just somewhat prevalent?
It happens. Japan is full of lolicon pedophiles, it seems. So, girls can get suckered into that sort of thing, especially with the prospect of making money. In America, this exact type of teenage girl with zero morals would be bending her ankles past her ears for guys for free, so there's not a whole lot of difference. Some other teachers I know were out one night and saw a teenage girl giving her boyfriend a BJ under a bridge somewhere. It happens. But by and large, the kids I work with (junior high, not high school) are far more innocent than their American counterparts.

As for what I've been up to, we are now working on DVD 7 of the Gundam TV series. My 2nd box set of Rose of Versailles arrived a few days ago, so we will watch that after we finish Gundam. I also bought Discotek's Venus Wars re-release along with it.

I'm re-watching Macross Plus. I find myself watching it at least once a year. I always enjoy it, and eventhough she's psychotic, I love Sharon Apple. Yoko Kanno's best music in this anime right here!

Yeah, Sharon Apple is a much more appealing virtual idol to me than Hatsune Miku. And it's pretty incredible we're even going down that route in the first place.

Nitro and I finished "The Devil is a Part-Timer" tonight. I was a decent series, but it ends with so many loose ends that I really hope they make a second season, otherwise I'd feel like it was kind of a waste of time (since almost nothing gets resolved by the end...they literally spend the last episode doing next to nothing, really.)

I started watching Megazone 23. I picked it up for $4 at FYE the other day, and I'm really enjoying it. I had the artbook for years before I even watched the anime, so now I appreciate it so much more. I was thinking I should pick up the collection instead and hold off, but I'm glad I didn't bother. I do want the other 2 for collection purposes, but I heard they weren't all that great anyways, so I can wait.

Haha yeah, I hear that alot. While I do like Vocaloids to an extent, Sharon Apple is far superior. But then again she doesn't sound like a whiney autotune, and she's not totally moe-blobbed either. I do wish there were a more mature looking Vocaloid though, but in today's anime market she probably wouldn't sell well.

Megazone 23 part 2 is actually really good. Great action, great animation and the Umetsu designs are so different from the Hirano designs that it becomes its own entity entirely. You don't need to bother with part 3, though, since it's kinda blah in both writing and animation, but you absolutely need to pick up part 2 sometime.
