Maiden Japan will be releasing the Patlabor films on blu-ray and DVD! First one will be released in May, the others are will come sometime later this year.

YAY! I'm so excited, I hope the blu-rays look good!

I am guessing they would be using the same old HD masters that were used for the Japanese BDs back in the late 2000s. So probably the same situation as the recent NA Ghost in the Shell and Wings of Honneamise BDs where they used the old window boxed HD masters.

Mmm, you've got a point...still should at least be a slight upgrade from the old DVDs, at least?

In other news, Jin-Roh's blu-ray is up for pre-order now: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R6P ... 4NBBQUMDI5

OTOH, I caught a showing of a theatrical digital-source release of Patlabor 2 that was making the rounds in certain rep theatres internationally and it looked different from from I've seen of the original Japanese BDs (I'd better admit here that I am not really sure if the original BDs were windowboxed or not--in my memory and my assumption it was, but doing some casual googling, it may not have been windowboxed after all). But the source I saw looked MUCH BETTER--either that or the original Japanese BDs were better than I remembered. If it's a new HD master I saw, then you definitely won't be disappointed. If it's the old HD master I was watching, well, it looks a LOT better than I remembered.

...but where is that eventual Gall Force pickup I was suggesting in the buy and trade thread? ;)

Seriously, though, it will be nice to have some of these back in print. Street Fighter 2 fans should be happy, even though I've seen it a million times and own way too many versions of it already. I actually don't recall ever seeing Robot Carnival and Night on the Galactic Railroad, even though they are considered classics. So it will be nice to finally get around to them.

That is so cool! I'll happily toss my bootleg Robot Carnival DVD in the trash and buy a legit one. I'm sure that the SFII movie will be without the U2 song and an unedited shower scene of Chun Li's thighs. I think Manga Video was responsible for that. Or was the U2 song in the Ghost in The Shell movie? We used to call them "Mangle Video" back in the day.

The guys from U2 did the song for Ghost in the Shell. Yeah, people are already starting to wonder how many versions of SFII might be on that disc, they made several cuts of it. XD That's gonna be interesting to see, lol.

Manga was weird about trying to get people to watch their stuff...they seemed to think injecting American music would totally bring in more viewers...but then again, Funimation did similar stuff with the DBZ movies, iirc.
