Attack on Titan is one of those series were people seem to either really love it or just outright don't like it. I mostly like it because out of all of the anime in the past couple of years, it's one of the most unique stories I've seen. And bonus--the style isn't the typical generic moe-blob style.
I also love that there are strong female characters in the series that aren't solely there as love interests for everyone to fawn over, or just an excuse to have a woman bounce around in skimpy clothes. Since they're all in the military, everyone wears the same uniforms, and they're not at all "revealing". While there are some female characters that are sometimes the episode's comic relief, there are other times when the same character will shine as a strong soldier. Mikasa, one of the strongest characters,
is even drawn very realistically, with highly-defined ab muscles! You rarely see that in any anime or manga, and that really made me happy.
I know there's a ton of AoT fans foaming at the mouth out there, but I rarely get into that aspect of fandom. I just enjoy watching it for stuff like this. Along with the very detailed world-building, it's one of the more realistic scifi/fantasy anime titles I've seen in recent years. The creator definitely thought this one out, and I appreciate it.
Again, this, ditto plus.
In some ways it reminds me of Berserk (the TV series) insofar as for the most part the enjoyment is watching the characters interact. Everyone has their own motivations and/or agenda. I AM rather surprised at how stagnate technology is given how sophisticated the 3D Maneuver Gear is.
The complete and utter lack of MOE (as a set 'intentionally designed specifically for fetish statues, hug pillows and washable bathroom posters') and the fact that all the gals aren't hopelessly in love with the main protagonist is quite a joy for me. And yes, the gals are actually women, real looking people. It would be VERY easy to have a more fetishized version of the uniform to show off huge breasteses and panties and thigh-high stockings and tiny skirts to expose the maximum 'absolute territory'- and they don't.
(mind, I'm not pure. Of course I like attractive gals in skimpy/sexy costumes. But you know, not PANDERING. Not that carefully and exactly formulated way of the MOE. Organic. fitting to the overall tone and feel of the 'world'. )
I'm liking it.

We watched Adieu Galaxy Express 999 with the mom-in-law tonight (the Discotek DVD). Very vivid animation. The ending seemed to be a bit tacked-on, but I've decided that when it comes to Matsumoto anime, I just consider it as going for a ride.

Ha... That's a fair point. Mind you, he did once say that he just made his material for himself about his wandering dreams and never quite knew how to end the journey once it had begun. Then he just shrugged, and I knew that I had to take it or leave it.
And, in that regard I have just watched the Arcadia BD release, which I am sure will divide the class when we discuss Matsumoto next semester. In both the Japanese and international undergrads, there is a very clear split between those who love and hate the Station Master.

We watched Galaxy Angel S tonight. It's only just two quick episodes, so one TV special. (Thus the "S" in the title.) I just bought the Galaxy Angel X box set, which miraculously has not yet spiked in price, it being a Bandai release and all. I've already watched GAX as fansubs and we loved it, so therefore it deserves being owned on DVD.
We haven't watched Galaxy Angel together since probably before our daughter was born, so it's been at least five years. My wife loves making stuffed dolls, and once upon a time she was constructing her own Nomad doll. She even entertained the idea of cosplaying as Mint at the SDCC. That never happened, unfortunately! She never even completed the Nomad doll.

With Space Brothers wrapping up I've been hitting the anime much harder. (Part of it is that I feel like I ought to use my Crunchyroll membership more effectively.)
So I've been watching Genshiken lately. (The newest series.) Never saw any of its predecessors but am highly amused by the focus on the female fandom this time around.
Also Silver Spoon is really good .
I also watch Free! for its crackiness. It's still an enjoyable fluff anime although I dread the fangirls that will be birthed from such a show premise (involving a male swimming team).
I like the Watamote manga quite a bit for its oddly positive look on life. I'm not sure where the anime is heading because you sense she is supposed to go berserk but that's not how the manga works so... where is this going and can it not get tiring?
Not sure what other new shows I"m going to keep. I watch ServantxService when bored. ALso watched DogxScissors when REALLY bored. Not motivated to finish Gargantia. It looked like Nadia to me but then had the swimsuit episode so early in its run that I was annoyed and stopped watching.

I just watched Metal Skin Panic Madox 01 for the first time. It's certainly a product of its time, so it has that nostalgia aspect (even though I never saw it back in the day). What is really interesting about this DVD is the interview with Robert Woodhead, in which he gives a bit of a background of anime fandom before Madox's commercial VHS release.

I pretty much enjoy Free! for the same reasons. XD It's cute and silly, and it's a nice change of pace from similar shows were it's just excuses to look at cute girls. Now we have one for cute boys!
I was wondering about that, myself, for Watamote...the opening is kind of misleading?
It also makes me wonder how they're going to end it, as well. Maybe she'll find a school club and become queen of the nerds? XD

Wow, you actually found a DVD of Madox?! Apparently it's insanely rare (I heard because supposedly Animeigo didn't print many, since it didn't sell well). I'd love to see that Robert Woodhead interview...any chance you could rip it from the DVD and upload it somewhere?

The Maddox DVD? Crikey... I've never so much as seen the case. My VHS is getting a bit shabby now (and I have not had anything upon which to play it for years). That's a good fond right there.
