Oh, shine on you shining star, tumblr! If you have links or something, I would love to see them. While I remember being ridiculously into Ranma and my friends and I would have "serious" discussions about it - we never approached anything like social commentary. I guess it's the difference between finding her work back when she was known specifically for comedy and getting into her work because of Inu Yasha's mainstream exposure.

I even got ran out of a Sailor Moon mailing list once because I slipped up and referred to the english DIC version a few times in my posts, and referring to DIC's Sailor Moon was a big no-no at the time. Many fans on the Sailor Moon usenet group often cross posted to the rec.arts.anime.misc group for no other reason than to be annoying.
My sister and I really got into the show during it's first syndication run 95-96 and it was about the same time I started hanging out on the Net, so I got caught up in a lot of the same stuff you were talking about. It's when we first got into the Sailormoon fansub scene, too... While I think there were a ton of crackpots and rules lawyers in that fandom, there were also a lot of pretty chill people, too. I may be tainted though because I wasn't on Usenet; just surfing the web. We'd hit a crazy's site, bookmark it for re-reading or pass it along to our other friends - occasionally get involved in a chat or email thread with the admin. To me though, and there might be other factors involved in this, when Sailor Moon got picked up by Toonami and they aired the rest of R, S and SuperS, to me that's when that fandom really lost it. Maybe it's because it was one of those shows that I really got into when I first became a fan, then the drought of not having anything new licensed or re-released on wider networks, then all of a sudden, these new kids show up at my clubhouse and they're not the same as the kids I'd been hanging out with. I checked out from that pretty quickly, which in a way was kind of a shame because I really wanted to see S and SuperS, but shut myself away from it all when it was airing on TV, so I wouldn't be "one of them".

I am going to admit, as purely a spectator, the first time I saw this I thought it was hilarious. I think when I saw the same dude doing the same thing the next year, I was over it. I can only imagine that probably by the time I saw it the first time, you'd probably seen it dozens of times. Then again, as a particularly dopey teenager, I saw a lot of myself in the Ryoga character, so I may have given him a pass.

To the credit of these over-zealous, American fans of manga/anime, they were getting their first exposure to the some the best that this otherwise foreign medium had to offer -- at least in terms of fun-factor, which was relatively low in 90's, American comics.
Even within the context of the Japanese market, Takahashi-san was apart-from-the-crowd.
