Ah, you beat me to it! I was just coming here to post the link. I'm pretty excited to see this. You can just barely see a glimpse of the token Gatlantian sideburn-like eyebrows. Very cool to see this! So it looks like Saturday is already spoken for, so I am hoping to go see this movie Sunday morning.

Oh, the sidebrows (eyeburns?) aren't token, not by half. It's now officially a racial genetic trait.

If you have been trying to keep from learning anything, I won't spoil some of the surprises revealed in the recently released 'Yamato 2199 Pia' mook. You'll see plenty of sidebrows, believe you me. :)

Given all the HUGE changes in various galactic relations, I honestly wonder if Dessler will be rescued by Gatlantis, or if he ends up 'rescuing' himself (and young Talen) and ends up a complete 'wild card' in the eventual second series.

Seriously, Ark of the Stars looks to be borrowing SO MANY disparate elements from across Yamato History, there's no telling where Izubuchi will go in a new series.

Which I must hasten to point out there has been ZERO mention of another 26 episode production. They play this game very close to the vest. There have been hints that another movie wouldn't be a bad thing, that's the best we get.

(Izubuchi REALLY wants to deal with pre-Gamilas attack on Earth. He wants to show the early battles, the destruction of terraformed Mars. It looks like Ark of the Stars is NOT that movie after all.)

Given what we see in just that few minutes of the opening of the movie, there's a butt-tonne of groundwork laid down for another series. DON'T TEASE US IZUBUCHI! :)

I really don't see the interest in a prequel series. It's like Star Wars. We already know everything gets screwed up. I don't really care to see it. I want them to go forward, not backward.

I'm on a modeling forum where I spend most of my time on, and one guy was like, "Oh, I figured everyone knows by now. They are gonna make a Yamato 2 series. This new movie is just building up to it." He didn't cite any references though, because nobody else has heard this. He must've only heard some rumor.

I hope we haven't seen the last of Dessler. He seems even more loathesome than the original Dessler, who even became an ally of sorts to the Yamato crew in that last movie I saw.

If I can go watch this on Sunday, I'll report my spoiler-free impressions. Apparently ANN has given a fairly spoiler-free plot synopsis, if you're interested to read it.

I fear your friend is, indeed, doing the "I know more than you" fanboy thing. Would this be on Hobbytalk?

Unlike me, because I DO know all kinds of stuff. :)

Bandai would be most happy to back a prequel movie because that would allow them to repackage existing kits and extend the ROI on the tooling. My opinion is that Izubuchi is just being cute, he likely wants to do more series but, and again this is just my opinion, Voyager is gun shy about being bold. Voyager wants to make sure, count the pennies, review this, study that, spin the wheels and so on.

They've generated over 10 Billion Yen worth of income (spread out, of course, across all the licensing partners) with the Yamato 2199 I.P. You would think with that much juice they'd figure they can do something as obvious an income generator as a second series, but two steps forward, one back.

Enjoy the movie!

Steve, I trust you more than some random guy on the Net anyday. It was actually on Starship Modeler where this guy said this.

So it's Saturday night, and the movie has premiered. Since 3am this morning though, my daughter has been puking. At this rate, I won't be able to watch the movie this weekend. It will have to wait until next weekend.
:(

Awww, I'm very sorry to hear she's not well. I don't wish to curse anything but it may well be you won't get a chance to see the film until it hits the rental stores. I mean, that's just reality, right? Something always comes up.

The upside, the Blu-Ray should have English subtitles. Just to make things easier. :)

But if you can, do try and catch it in the theater. Seems it's quite an experience. :)

Anymore merch released other than the plethora of model kits or the Hentai-like girls statues? Oh, yeah...boxer underwear...hmmm. Still looking for a baseball cap or a flight jacket. Would be great to have one like the original Galactica Colonial Viper pilot ones they used to sell all those years ago (that I never was able to afford). Are they going to release the rest of the Star Blazers 2199 Blu Rays or have they given up on the market here?

There's stuff coming. Not the kinds of things you or I would love but there is stuff coming out.

OTOH they are doing a 2-disc soundtrack for Star Ark. I'm pretty stoked about that.

Jackets, they do all kinds of jackets, it started back in 2010 with the Live Yamato uniform jackets and continues in fits and spurts, but.

a. EXPENSIVE. Like over $500 USD expensive.

b. LIMITED. Usually only available via the Yamato Crew members only site, or Bandai Premium, or other Japan Only venues.

c. NOT DESIGNED FOR AMERICAN FANS. Japanese clothing sizes run small. Americans do tend to be larger. Japanese XL clothing is generally a tight fit for those who are comfortable in American M. I have never seen anything offered in Japanese XXL, and many American fans, let's be honest, I include myself, would need at LEAST a Japanese 4XL which does not exist.

Where sumo get clothing is a mystery to me. :)

And you might as well forget seeing any more Star Blazers 2199 releases. Some say everything is on hold pending forward movement on the Live Star Blazers movie (which, I for one, strongly feel will not happen), I think it's the typical Japanese Company reaction when things don't go as expected- they fold up their tent, pick up their toys and blame US for not doing what they wanted (i.e. pay Japanese prices and so on) and go home.

Just pick up the Japanese BDs. Start from scratch, the disc episode assignment doesn't align, you can't pick up Yamato 2199 5 and 6 and think you've got it all. There are 7 discs to Yamato 2199.

(Unlike DVDs, Japan and America are in the same Blu Ray region and don't require a hacked player. Yamato 2199 BDs have English subtitles but no English dub track. There is no complete box set, if there was it would NOT be cheaper. You're stuck paying out roughly $80/disc times 7 discs. )

I definitely plan to see this new movie in the theaters. I already have a ticket to see the movie, so I won't let it go to waste. I am sure it's going to happen this weekend, and I want to see Hobbit 3 that same weekend too!

So the last time I was at Otakara (the big used merchandise/otaku paradise store on the edge of town), I saw the 2199 BDs used for only about 3,000 yen each. The first volume is the stinker, since it is only 2 episodes, but the rest have 4 episodes each. I just ordered X-Men: Days of Future Past and Guardians of the Galaxy on BD from Amazon, so I have no choice but to get a BD player sometime soon to watch them on!

So I went to go see the movie today! I'm sure this is not the last we'll see of the Gatlantis White Comet Empire. In the initial 10 minutes you may have already watched of the movie, you are introduced to Saito, the high-tension ground trooper who Koudai was always butting heads with in Yamato 2, and I believe also the captain of the Andromeda... whats-his-name. There are new characters introduced in this movie, such as the Yamato's night crew. The main new character is a girl named Mikage. You also get to see a lot more of Berger, the Gamilus captain.

Seeing the movie on the big screen was incredible. With my current Japanese language level, I think I understood the gist of the film, but so much of the SF speak goes over my head. Gatlantis ships fire regular lasers and what definitely looks like photon torpedoes from Star Trek.

I won't go into a whole lot of spoilers, but as you already know, the Yamato crosses paths with the Gatlantians, and it isn't friendly. It's been a long time since I've seen the second Yamato series, but the Gatlantians are far more imposing than what I remember. They're very war-like, a mix of bushido Japanese, Viking, and a bit of Klingon in a way. They still have their "sidebrows" for sure!

The second act of the movie is very surreal, like a Star Trek plot. Let's just say they stay a week in a hotel. Despite the name they give for the hotel, it is obviously inspired by the Bradbury Building in Los Angeles. I think the creators are just Blade Runner fans.

So you can expect a fantastic fleet battle in the 3rd act, in which the Yamato fights alongside a Gamilus fleet against the Gatlantians. Hope that's not ruining anything for anybody, but I think anyone who knows Yamato can come to expect this.

I am pretty sure we are going to get a second Yamato series. The movie is awesome.
