I re-watched Video Girl Ai, watched the 1993 Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, and yesterday before sleep watched Girl Detective Club (1986), which was so useless, but I enjoyed it anyways in a small way.

I really wish they'd re-release that old Jojo's OAV. Some of those old single DVDs are so overpriced now. ><

I couldn't even find the 1993 one! I found the 2000 one, most of which were bootlegs. But I didn't like the 2000 one as much as the 1993 one. THE WORLD!!! LOL

I guess they recalled and stopped production on it because of that that controversy surrounded getting complaints: Both studio A.P.P.P. and Shueisha halted OVA/manga shipments of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure after a complaint had been launched against them from Egyptian Islamic fundamentalists, after noticing a scene in the OVAs that has the villain, Dio Brando, reading a book depicting pages from the Qur'an. This recall affected the English-language release of the manga as well, causing Viz Media and Shueisha to cease publication for a year. Even though the manga did not feature that specific scene, Shueisha had Araki redraw scenes that depicted characters fighting on top of, and destroying, mosques. - taken from Wikipedia.

I looked it up after watching it, wanting to buy the DVD for a friend later, but yeah...hard to find now. :(

That wouldn't surprise me. There was a lot of back and forth about that when it was happening, iirc. Some people are still mad over the manga being "edited", but really, Viz didn't edit it themselves--the new edits came from Araki himself. So I don't know why people think Viz had anything to do with it still.

Right now would literally be the perfect time for someone to re-release those old OAVs and cash in on Jojo's new found popularity in the west. I'm actually really enjoying seeing Jojo's popularity rising among anime fans again...that used to be a title that, even if people hadn't read or seen it, they'd at least had heard about. I'm really glad that Crunchyroll took a chance on the newer anime, and that Viz decided to pick the manga back up again. (I'm really looking forward to those new editions of Phantom Blood next year!)

I had the Galaxy Express 999 movie on in the background while I worked on a model for my daughter. I've never seen the English dub before, but they really did a decent job with the voices! Plus they didn't dink around with the names, like renaming Tetsuro "Billy" or something dumb like that.

Was that the Viz release dub? I know there was a dub even before that that never made it's way to DVD, iirc (that's the one I saw as a kid), but I can't remember if they changed the names in that or not.

There are two dubs. I think the one Greg is talking about is the Roger Corman one.

Still watching KOR. I love Orange Miracle. I can't help but think of my girlfriend every time I hear it.

I told myself I didn't want to watch more SM Crystal, but Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter is my favorite, so checked that out earlier today. Then saw Hulu had all of Utena + the movie, and watched it from the beginning again starting with episode 1. It's the dub, but I don't mind. And I am caught up with the J-Drama, Blue Blazes to episode 10. C:

No. Greg is most assuredly talking about the Viz one. I remember the Corman dub quite well. They renamed Tetsuro "Joey" and Maetel had an awful grandma-sounding voice.

Anyway, I watched the first 2 Fatal Fury OVAs. I somehow expected the first OVA to be better (never seen it before, or if I did, I forgot), but it was pretty mediocre. Geese deserved better, he's a wonderful villain in the games, but he basically got dropped by Terry in less than 5 minutes. And considering how important Lily's memory is to Terry in the later OVAs, I was surprised to discover that he only really knew her for a couple of hours in total. So yeah, the narrative and pacing is way off here. It needed more than 43 minutes, and yet there are also parts that feel padded. Also, Andy for some reason has silver-blue hair

The 2nd OVA holds up though. The fights in this one are visceral and brutal compared to the 1st OVA and Motion Picture. FF Motion Picture is by far the most fun, but the fighting consists mostly energy balls and lasers. The 2nd OVA is a lot more hands on. And Krauser is one of the best fighting game anime villains--he's the Ivan Drago of fighting game anime. At 70 minutes, it's paced well enough to be considered a solid film.
