The "what is this anime/manga?" thread

I often see screenshots from cool looking anime that I can't identify. Usually this happens when looking through old Japanese anime magazines (Out, Animedia, My Anime, Animage) or when some jerk on Tumblr posts a cool picture without tagging the anime title.

So here's the first batch. What are these?

I really like these designs:

Cute ninjas!

Obviously these are Kia Asamiya designs but they don't look familiar to me:

This looks fun:

These two were on the same page and appear to be from the same show:

The motorcycle gang is from Bomber Bikers of Shonan, which the first OVA was released on Vhs from AnimEigo, but never went past that due to low sales. The rest... im not too sure.

Thanks. Google it and it has that 80s aesthetic that I think a lot of us really like.

First one is Fantasia: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%81%B5 ... 8%E3%81%82

Third one is Sonic Soldier Borgman II: New Century 2058

Nazi dude is Keishin Keidan/Kishin Corps, IIRC

Oh, The Girl From Phantasia! I've seen that. It was released on VHS by AD Vision in the old days.

Google image search confirms you right on all accounts. Thanks!

I even have Kishin Corps on DVD. Attempted to watch it once but didn't get far.

The second is Sasuga no Sarutobi 『さすがの猿飛』. The title is in the picture, but I recognize it because I came by it when looking into other work that Takeshi Shudo was involved in. Apparently all of it came out in France at some point? It's an anime adaptation of a manga that ran in Shonen Sunday from 1980 to 1984.

Just reading off the Japanese wikipedia entry real quick, a sequel called Sasuga no Sarutobi G 『さすがの猿飛G』started publication in the magazine 2017 July issue of MONTHLY HERO'S (月刊ヒーローズ). The G stands for Global.

I've not actually seen any of this series myself.

Thanks karageko!

That show looks amazing. Cute 80s character designs and it's about ninjas. How is this show almost completely unknown?

I'm guessing it's either just not very good, or it's super creepy in terms of how the young female characters are treated and nobody wants to import it.

While I'm not necessarily convinced that poor and/or creepy treatment of young female characters has necessarily stopped anime of that ilk from being brought over to the West, I did take a look at the first episode out of curiosity to see if that could have even been a concern. It could have just been another one of many shows from back then that probably never got noticed or got attention from licensors.

Towards the end there's a ninja dual between the main character Nikumaru (lit. round meat) and his teacher Norio Wakamoto. uses a ninja technique called kamikaze for the explicit purpose of summoning a whirlwind to lift up the skirts of his female classmates, which turns out to be his teacher's weakness... And then it is acknowledged explicitly that the teacher is a lolicon. Not a great look if we're going by a one-episode test. That being said the rest of it was mildly amusing anime school comedic fare. The main character is somewhat of a lite version of Urusei Yatsura's Ataru as far as chasing after girls; more of a goofball and not so much a huge jerk.

My favorite part of it was this brief segment about how ninja in the modern day are basically spies for various countries, narrated over a car chase sequence. I was cracking up at how unamused the "beautiful lady" driver is despite being involved in this car chase gunfight.

Also as an aside I just noticed that apparently Joe Hisaishi did the music for this.

(The teacher's name is actually Ogata, played by Norio Wakamoto)

Wow, thanks Karageko, you did the research!

Hah, I knew it! Dangit Japan!

Thanks for the description/review and screenshots. The show looks/sounds like it could be really great otherwise.
