Introducing Yourself In Japanese

Introductions seem to be a big thing for the Japanese.

I've learned the standard

はじめまして。____です。よろしくお願いします。

But I know that you can say other things while introducing yourself as well.

My question is, is the above formula more or less appropriate on pretty much any occasion?

The last time I had to introduce myself to a Japanese was a few weeks ago. I started with はじめまして, and then stopped because this person is fairly eminent and I was hesitant as to whether the above would really be appropriate...

Yes, that formula works well. You could add "watashi no namae wa ________ desu."
私の名前は______です。

To be even more formal, you could say ________ともします。That is keigo, though. Maybe a bit too formal for normal conversations.
