WTB/Trade 1986 Newtype Magazines

Post by HansonKun »

Hi,

I know this is a long shot, but I thought I'd give it a go. The short version is that I'm looking for 4 specific issues of Newtype Magazine in order to complete a full run of issues. I'm open to purchase, however I am also open to trades. I have a handful of early 90's Newtypes, as well as some 80's/early 90's artbooks, and other misc. vintage stuff. If anyone is interested, we can discuss, and I can send pics of items of potential interest to you.

The issues I'm looking for are:
1986 - March
1986 - July
1986 - August
1986 - December

I'm not picky about condition, and I certainly don't expect any of the extras/add-ins.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

The longer version:
I've had a subscription to Newtype since late 1994, when a Japanese bookstore (Blossom's Books) opened up near my parents house when I was in College. This is when I was the most into anime, so it was a huge rush to pick up the magazines. I was able to find some earlier ones, but not too many. Eventually a Kinokuniya opened up close as well, Blossom's closed down, and I just kept up with the sub. Over the years, as my involvement in anime waxed and waned, I kept up the sub as more of a way to know to myself that I still loved this stuff, even if it didn't dominate my hobbies like it used to. Also, it was just part of my life routine at that point.

Recently I've been getting more and more involved again (perhaps a mid-life crisis ^_^;), and was going through my old mags in the garage. I hadn't consciously set out to collect earlier, but I chanced across two lucky auctions on yahoo japan (while looking for Nadia merch) that filled about 90% of what I was missing. I said what the hell, and decided to make it my quest. I've been able to find all but the above 4 through various online sites (Yahoo auctions, Mercari, Madarake, Suguraya). It's been about a year of watching, and these 4 still haven't come up, so I'm hoping to see if there's anyone in the community that can help.

I'm still not sure exactly what I'll do with the set when it's done. I had thought of putting up scans, etc, but really, the Oldtype/Newtype tumblr excels at that already. Hopefully I'll figure something out to share all the odds and ends eventually.

Have you tried Mandarake? They're a Japan based business that sells all sorts of anime and seiyuu related merchandise.

They have older issues of Newtype as well as most other well known Japanese anime related magazines. The shipping will be pricey, but most Newtype issues are about 500 yen each.

I have been checking Mandarake as well, but they're pretty thin on the earlier issues. It also seems like they've started selling on US ebay for some fairly inflated (in my opinion) prices as well.

I've been following the Laserdisc market for a few years now, and it seems those prices have slowly started to get inflated. They got cool stuff like D1 Devastator (which no fansub exists iirc) but the collectors set comes with a soundtrack cd and someone is asking $60 for it. I just got Bad Boys Boogie that I wound up paying MORE on shipping from Canada than the LD itself. I'm hunting down OVA's on LD of stuff I sort of know or never heard of, Bad Boys Boogie being one.

You might be able to find some of the issues on Yahoo Japan although you'll need to go through a deputy service to do so as most Japanese sellers will not send abroad.

The shipping will still be pricey but being unfamiliar with how Mandarake is pricing things on eBay, it might ultimately be cheaper.

Yeah, sadly with the pandemic, most Japanese sellers and stores will only ship via FedEx or DHL which usually starts at around $15-20 and will go up depending on the weight of your ordered items. With that in mind, you might want to shop around and see what would be less expensive--paying the inflated shipping+fees+item cost of ordering through a shopping service, or just buying them outright on eBay. (On the plus side, FedEx and DHL shipping IS pretty fast, so you'd get your stuff relatively quickly!)

True, the shipping options are limited right now, though the speed of the deliveries is nice. Right now, with only 4 issues to go, I'm less concerned about the shipping. It's just finding them for sale/trade at all. I guess I just need to be patient and hope they show up eventually.
