Post by davemerrill »

Let's Anime is back with a look at the 1985 Rintaro film Dagger Of Kamui, coming soon on crowdfunded Blu-Ray, if only we can solve the mystery, find the treasure and defeat Tenkai's shinobi killers! https://letsanime.blogspot.com/2025/04/ ... er-of.html

It was nice to read. I can -still- hear in my head 'the three killer ninja...are at your service'...and will never appear again (in the dub version)

I remember seeing portions of Dagger of Kamui at an anime meeting back in 1986 and being impressed by the visuals of the action sequences along with the music. I ended up buying the movie on laserdisc on my first trip to Japan that same year, and have seen those same scenes many times. However, to be honest I’ve never sat down and watched the whole film. Crazy huh? After reading your blog post, I’m inspired to dig up the LD player out of storage and finally sit down and watch it.

Go and watch it =) It is interesting the times something from decades ago strikes differently (or the same) =) Let us know your thoughts.

Certainly a lot of the historical material in the film just went "whoosh" over my head when I first saw it. Even with subtitles, at least a rudimentary background in what was going on in Japan at the time is kind of necessary to really appreciate the film, and I certainly didn't have that.

Apologies for some of the thread necromancy here but I am so sorry I slept on Kamui for so long. Seeing some of the bad dub just turned me off of it. Big mistake. It's a really cool film - weird in all the right ways and that soundtrack is gold. Can't wait to see it on BluRay.

that bad dub is a real deal breaker, as it is for so many titles.
