Later in life, approximately two weeks ago, I "discovered" this show, the book it was based on, and the huge following it has in Japan. I have no idea how I somehow managed to never be exposed to at least the live action Disney version, but...whatever.

Anyway, has this show ever been fansubbed in English? I plan to have the LD Box by next month some time and I have plans to start fansubbing at least a "tape worth" of episodes.

This is a terrific story and a show loved by millions. Its been officially translated into Spanish, German, Tagalog, Chinese, and who knows how many languages but the kids in Wisconsin, where the story is based, have never had access to it, which I think is a terrible shame.

There is, or was, a Rascal character store in the "character goods alley" in Tokyo station. It was closed when we went past it last summer, sadly enough.

As far as I know Rascal's never been fansubbed, but there's a fan community around the World Masterpiece Theater shows that have been working to fansub things like Heidi; maybe they'll get to the Rascal.

it is certainly one of those anime shows that's giant in Japan but American fans are unaware of, for the most part.

The most surprising thing about me somehow never having been exposed to Rascal is the amount of merch associated with it. It's not Totoro-level or anything, but even American eBay has a bunch of Rascal stuff. How did I miss this all this junk? :)

Don't feel bad. My only exposure to Araiguma Rascal was the puzzle game for the Super Famicom. I didn't know it was based off a TV until later. On top of that, I didn't know there was a Disney version until you just said so!

I do remember seeing the Rascal shop in Tokyo Station's Character Street a while back, actually... I think that's how I realized that the game was based off of an anime.
