the Earth Defense Command, no, seriously

The roughly mid-90's and earlier (generally pre-Toonami, pre-anime boom) era of anime & manga fandom: early cons, clubs, tape trading, Nth Generation VHS fansubs, old magazines & fanzines, fandubs, ancient merchandise, rec.arts.anime, and more!

the Earth Defense Command, no, seriously

Post by davemerrill »

Back in the day if you wanted to join a national anime club you basically had to sign up with something called the "Cartoon Fantasy Organization", which sounded like a group of pervy cartoon deviants, or the "Earth Defense Command", which sounded like a bunch of SF military nerds saluting each other all day. Naturally I joined both.

I wrote a big article about the EDC for the old Starblazers.com, and then when Starblazers.com decided it didn't need any fandom content, the article went away, and now it's back at Let's Anime complete with images of old fanzines and fan art of Derek Wildstar fighting Bruce Lee. So there ya go!

Oh wow, this is great! I like hearing about old Project A-kon stuff, since I've only been going to it the last couple of years & don't know much about the history. Those old fanzines look pretty good for being so old, too, I'm impressed!

CF/O...I never joined them...I partied with them...but never joined, because most of the time I did hang out with them at a con, some of them were always drunk! Lol...

As for the Earth Defense Command, did they throw Starblazers parties in California? I went to one...I think I have video! Lol..

I still have all my old C/FO materials. I was the first registered fan in Canada, beating my later friend Craig Walker by one month as I recall. I did stuff with them for several years but ended up doing things independently after a couple years. I think Fred Patten's stuff is in a library in California but access may be limited. If there is anything you need me to scan for this site, let me know and I'll have a look and see what I have.

The first registered fan in Canada... That's a pretty cool title to have. You always impress me with your experience, _D_.

Fred Patten... Another guy I've been meaning to invite over here. I know he had a stroke some years back, but I don't know how he's doing now; hope he's managing alright...

Send me a hitlist of guys you think would like this forum sometime, will ya?

I think that 'Anime Kyo UK' was the first English Chapter of the EDC (maybe the only one?!). I enjoyed the club's fanzine.
