Was there any anime that you enjoyed back then but when you watched it recently and realized...it sucked or wasn't that good at all.

"Dirty Pair"....Maybe it was because at the time I was a teenager. But watch it again, I'm realizing...it wasn't that great.

"Voltron"...I purchased all sets of "Voltron" recently because I loved it when I was younger, but watching it again...the acting was very bad, especially for the second series (Air, Land, Sea)...

Samurai Showdown (the one released by ADV). I watched it over and over again when I was like...13/14 years old. But I popped it in last year, it was so slow and boring I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it at the time, but I haven't bothered trying to watch it again.

If we're talking manga, Inu Yasha. Loved it at first, collected it, then slowly over time didn't like it as much.

I agree with Voltron, but watch the originals. Dairugger XV was pretty cool. I finished watching that a year and a half ago.

But Dirty Pair? I like it. It's been within recent years, that I actually watched the whole TV series. In the early '90s, I only had access to the stuff Streamline dubbed. I never got around to getting the fansubs. I bought the Japanese LDs and watched those with my wife about 6 years or so ago. While I admit that the show does better with action episodes than goofy ones, I really enjoyed it. Then again, this is me watching it for the first time within recent years. (Funny how I have to gauge most of my recent anime years with before my 5 year old daughter was born. She's getting bigger and appreciating more now, at least.)

It was re-released in the US, so I may have to purchase the latest DVD release and watch it in Japanese.

Oh, you mean re-watching the old Dirty Pair dubs wasn't like it used to be back then. Yes, I finished buying the complete Dirty Pair DVDs from Nozomi this past year. (Except for Dirty Pair Flash... I never cared for the show, especially the annoying, early '90s character designs.

The Dirty Pair features--(Flight 005 Conspiracy, Project Eden, Affair of Nolandia) actually are the least entertaining parts of the original Dirty Pair franchise, in my opinion. Those were the ones that have been around North America since the 80s.

I consider the OVA and TV episodes to be substantially more entertaining because I think they work best as a buddy-cop type of show.

Project Eden does have those great opening credits, though.

This is one of the things I'll be tackling in my podcast--over the last 2 years, I've been rewatching a lot of old anime and some of it? I just go, "Did I SERIOUSLY like this way back then??" One off the top of my head was "Elf Princess Rane". Like...I guess I can understand why I liked it back in the day. So random! Silly! Weird! Hahaha funny anime hairstyles!...but after rewatching it, I was just like, "Gee, this is...really kind of a waste of time, isn't it?"

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I felt SO STARVED for anime in the early 90s...I mean, I was up for watching anything I could get my hands on back then. But also, let's take Elf Princess Rane (or anything similar, really): it's a prime example of what anime was to a lot of people in a nutshell, right? Weird, silly, bright color schemes, goofy characters, fanservice, crazy plot (even though it didn't really get a conclusion of any kind), catchy music, etc etc. I guess me & others latched on to stuff like this because it was so "different" at the time, but now obviously there are probably hundreds of titles that did it better.

This is where things can get a bit dangerous for old school anime fans who keep saying "they don't make anime like they used to" to a new generation of anime viewers. Have them watch "Voltron" or "Robotech" and not sure how those the younger children will feel towards the stuff that we watched.

I have rewatched "Bubblegum Crisis" and even the "Kimagure Orange Road" LD's and also the "Tenchi Muyou" OVA's and still enjoyed them.

I bought Venus Wars on DVD when Discotek re-released it and still loved it. I think I loved it more now than I did back when I watched it. Same goes for Windaria, a really underrated drama. I think I cried this time around watching it again, and I read up on some of the backstory of the original story/manga and made me love it all the more as well.
