Attention all crossover-fanfic lovers! Here's a crossover coming to life on the silver screen December 7th!
Here's the website!
Here's the trailer!
Lupin is up to his usual thievery, although this time, Conan is hot on his trail. It looks pretty cool! I can't pretend to be the biggest Conan fan, but I used to watch it regularly on TV when it was back to back with Inu Yasha 10 years ago. My wife read the first 20 volumes of the manga back then, too, so she's more familiar with the characters than I am. (I've never seen the show with subtitles since I've only watched it in Japan.)
Maybe I'll take my daughter to go see it.

This looks amazing!!!
The scene where Goemon slices the skateboard in half captures exactly what I would hope this movie would be. I can't wait to see this!

I actually think it looks & sounds pretty cute, too! It reminds me of odd crossover stuff from the 80s, like that
Minky Momo versus Creamy Mami OAV or something.

I definitely wouldn't mind seeing it, even though I'm also not terribly knowledgeable of Detective Conan (I've read the first couple of vols and seen a few eps/random movies). I think I know enough to at least be able to follow/enjoy it, at least.

No way... really? I've never heard of this before! I bet Dave knows about this.
What kills me about Conan is that in every episode, Conan shoots a tranquilizer dart at his uncle (or whoever he is) so that he passes out. Conan hides behind his propped-up body and uses some voice synthesizer to sound like the uncle and he monologues to no end about how he solved the case. Nobody ever seems to notice how a slumped over man with his eyes closed can describe the mystery in great detail without moving his lips, nor do they notice Conan hiding behind him. Why can't he just be a boy wonder genius who figures things out? Furthermore, where does he get this neverending supply of tranquilizer darts? Won't those have some adverse affect on the man in the long run? Moreover, why doesn't he remember being knocked out? "Hey, you did a great job solving the case yesterday." "Huh? I did? I don't remember that!"
I haven't watched the show in such a long time, but it seems that it always ends up like this.

WELL, to be fair, the Creamy Mami Vs. Minky Momo one is like...3 mins long?

I believe it was an omake thing?
Oh, look, it's on Youtube:

Yeah, there's a lot that doesn't really make sense, but then again, it's a kid's show...so it's understandable if the premise is a little flimsy, right?

I'm not a huge Conan fan, so I may be off, but IIRC, the first few episodes DO have the detective note that, but then his ego takes over and he is just glad for the adulation and rolls with it.
From a "story" perspective, I believe he doesn't present the results himself because technically his older self is supposed to be DEAD and (again, at least early on) he is trying to keep anyone from catching on to who he is largely to prevent a second attempt.
From a "kid's manga psychological" perspective, I assume a large part of it is that Det. Conan IS a kids manga and many kids feel like they are not listened to BECAUSE they are kids, so the manga plays to that and gives him an adult outlet because "adults will listen to other adults".
As for where he gets all the darts/tranqs, there's a professor that helps him and gives him marketable gimmicks.
A possibly MORE interesting side note is that in the FIRST Detective Conan v. Lupin III crossover, Lupin does his normal "disguise" routine and that causes an interesting "incident" with respect to Conan's "solving the case" methodology.

Thanks for shedding light on my questions! Last night I was at Tsutaya and attempted to rent the first episode of Conan, but it was gone. I also noticed that the old '70s Yatterman show is now gone, so I'm glad my daughter got to watch those while we still had a chance.
So this isn't the first Conan and Lupin crossover? Here I was thinking that this was some new novelty.

Nope, the first one came out a couple of years ago (I think), altho it got a fair bit of criticism because Lupin & Conan barely interact or even know the other is involved in any way until the end. It also has an absolutely INSANE sequence of Conan (on a skateboard) chasing Fujiko (on a MOTORCYCLE). I THINK it also got some criticism for this also, but I was actually somewhat impressed with how it melded the character design styles of both shows.
edit: First one was in 2009

And here I just sat down and watched "The Return of Arsene Lupin" for the first time from TCM. Interesting that the actor playing the FBI man chasing Lupin, plays a character similar to Lupin in the popular "Falcon" series of films. I wonder how many Japanese are even aware of these films or even the Maurice LeBlanc books?

I'm not! I am glad you mentioned this. I will have to investigate!
