Menko cards - I bought most of these from "Flaming Carrot" artist Bob Burden, back when he was making a career out of being what TLC now calls an 'American Picker'.



Kimba The White Lion, Ultraman, Space Giants, Cyborg Big X, Prince Planet, Rainbow Soldier Robin, Ultra Q, these things are all over the map.

Here are a few old anime singles. The Cyborg 009 and Flying Phantom Ship are both 'Sonorama' storybook records (with awesome original Ishinomori illustrations) and the other two are TV theme songs for shows like 'Attack No. 1', 'Aim For the Ace', 'Moomin', Heidi, Girl Of The Alps', and whatever the Japanese title of "Fables Of the Green Forest" was.



I only knew "Fables" from the home videos Ziv released in the 80s, but apparently in Canada the show ran for years, whenever I run clips from the show here the audience goes "Oh man, I remember that.."

Wow, that stuff reminds me of a store in Japan called Mandarake. They have all sorts of old stuff like that.

Here's something I am rather proud of: my Dirty Pair figures by Epoch. This limited run of 2000 each (IIRC) is fairly hard to find, but I lucked out and got them on eBay for a super awesome price. Mainly because the auction was ending in the middle of the afternoon, and also because it was from a seller in Mexico. Regardless, these beautiful figures are mine. They are made from a cold cast resin, which is a combination of porcelain and resin, making these figures very sturdy. Click on the image below for a larger version.

As a matter of fact, the Flying Phantom Ship single was bought in Mandarake, the Nakano Broadway I think. The Heidi and Attack No. 1 singles were bought in Kanda Jinbucho. The 009 single came from a Mandarake but I don't know which one, it was a gift.

The Shibuya Mandarake had vinyl figures from "Fables Of The Green Forest", which is something I didn't think existed or would ever exist in any sane universe.

I used to have the Bandai Lovely Collection Dirty Pair figures, back in the day. I sold them at the second A-Kon to help me through some sort of vital financial crisis.

I also bought those off of eBay, for something like $20! I was amazed that nobody else bid. I only bought Yuri for $20, and saw that the auction for Kei ended with no bids. So, I offered to buy Kei for $20 as well, and he accepted.

The other figures in the foreground are by Wave for the release of the show on DVD in Japan. Not too satisfied with the figures since 1. they tend to sweat when it is warm and I have to wash them because they get sticky, and 2. they're too busty. To make it worse, Yuri is bustier than Kei, and any Dirty Pair fan knows that the opposite is true. Oh well. I still can't seem to part with those figures because I love DP so much.

Mandarake is incredible. There is a newer one in Akihabara that is several stories tall. I do prefer the quiet subtleness of the Broadway Building in Nakano over Akihabara though, and it's perfect for a rainy day. I used to go to the Mandarake in Osaka frequently when I lived in Himeji. That Mandarake has a karaoke stage. All the staff cosplay, and occasionally one of them will get up on the stage and sing a song from an old anime. Great fun. I saw in a recent Hobby Japan magazine that they've made a new Mandarake in Nagoya too.

Yup, those Lovely Gals Collection figures. There's also Creamy Mami and Sukebandeka figures in the series, though I never had those.

When we were in Tokyo we went to Mandarakes in Akihabara, Nakano Broadway, and Shibuya, enjoyed all three. I felt like mugging some of the people selling their stuff in Akiba. "Hey man, they're not going to give you anything for that X-Bomber toy. You should sell it to me." Nakano Broadway was amazing. There's a small part of my brain that's still there.

To be honest we found great stuff in Kanda, in Shimokitazawa, pretty much everywhere we went there was something to make our eyes bug out.

I'm not certain how old this is as I had purchased it recently just so I can have Lum hanging on my wall. At least it's an old school show! That counts right?!

Well, it's for a video CD, which generally speaking "predates" DVD. (I realize they were sold simultaneously for a time, but I can't imagine they were highly promoted with posters for very long, if at all)
