So I posted
this album over at
reddit. I had fun making it and thought you guys might get a kick out of it. It's basically a bunch of anime and manga art that's easily dated to the 80's because of the fashion or cars in the artwork.
If you guys have favorite totally 80's anime images, I'd love to see them.

Great list! To me,
Elle Vianno from ZZ Gundam looked like the quintessential valley girl: leotards, cropped jacket, extra long T-shirt, bracelets, and a pony tail off to one side. I could just imagine her saying, "That's, like,
totally grodie-to-the-max, for sure! Like, gag me with a steam shovel!"
Here are some more images of her.

Yeah she looks awesomely 80s. I really want to see ZZ. But I feel like I should finish Zeta first. I just hate Kamille though, and I find the fights confusing. Everyone is in a red suit. Who's the bad guy? I feel like my wife must feel when I make her watch Sci Fi or anime with me.
But the character art is so beautiful in both shows. I think I would like ZZ better than Zeta; I've heard it's a goofier show in general which sounds great in comparison to Kamille's angst fest.
But yeah Elle looks adorable.
My albums is getting way more traction on the
anime subreddit than the 80s subreddit.

So I take it you aren't very far into Zeta? Quattro/Shar had a red Rick Dias at first, but he eventually hands that down to Lt. Apolly once he gets the golden Hyaku Shiki. I don't remember any protagonists flying any red mobile suits.
Kamille is a reprehensible brat, always impulsively punching people. Both his parents are killed in front of his eyes though, so you do feel pity for him. Then later in the series, he really makes a more resolute soldier than Amuro ever was. Amuro was always "I don't wanna fight!", but Kamille becomes more decisive and courageous. Amuro becomes this way too in Zeta, so Kamille's character changes more quickly and even becomes a mentor to Katz.
You can't skip ahead to ZZ though, because it picks up right after final end battle between the AEUG and the Titans. ZZ involves the battle with the Axis forces, and the politics behind that is introduced in Zeta. Also, you'll need to watch Zeta to learn of Kamille's fate. Let's just say that Zeta doesn't have a happy ending, and Kamille's victory came with a great price. Unfortunately, the Zeta movie trilogy changes the tragic ending, thereby making it incompatible with ZZ.
The first 18 episodes of ZZ are a bit silly, which seemed out of place after such an intense series such as Zeta. By "silly" I mean "dumb." Then suddenly there's a "holy crap, did THAT just happen? I can't believe it!" moment, and from then on it gets serious.
ZZ has more of a "Gundam Team" flavor, with the Mk 2, Zeta, and Double Zeta Gundams all fighting along with each other. Plus the way the Double Zeta transforms, it harkens back to the G-Armor and such that requires cooperation and support pilots to make it work.

I kind of miss asshole main characters like Kamille in Z Gundam and Joe Yabuki in Ashita no Joe these days. Now we just get lead characters who shrivel up at any sign of conflict and only beat up people during extreme nerd rages. I guess it's a sign of the times.

I especially love 80's theatrical anime.
Must be the subconscious impression that Transformers the movie left on me as a kid. (Never did recover from Optimus' death)

Hahaha, this is incredible! I owe all my contemporary fashion taste to 80's anime and kid's TV presenters.

Doesn't help that most shows seem to be harems nowadays where the MCs are blatant self-insert materials.

Funny thing? I'm watching City Hunter (finally got the first part of the first series at a reasonable price) and man, I really miss that 'Sunrise' look. The Dirty Pair look. Bright colors, roundular characters, dudes in black suits, sunglasses, hats...
