The holes in your Anime and Manga Collection :
I have to admit I have a better than average anime collection. At least that is what I think However, I am missing some titles that I previously owned as well as collections that I started and did not complete. Now keep in mind in 2005 I was unemployed and sold my ENTIRE collection for gas, food, and cigarette money I had to rebuild it over from scratch over the last ten years and I got a better collection this time. However, I am missing a lot of common title that I said I was going to to pick up but never did. The titles I previously owned but I knew would always be a available for sell ,thus I have not bothered to replace them. Here some of the stuff I owned and no longer have
All the Studio Ghibli titles
Angel Cop
Keikko Kamen
Vampire Hunter D
Votoms
Battle Athletes
Legend of the Overfiend Series
Sailor Moon
Ranma 1 2
Them Manga title I would like to get again or complete are
Budda Series
Crying Freeman
Urresei Yatsure I read these compendiums until they broke apart
Maison Ikkoku sold them
So what are you guys and gals missing in your collections? What will you be your new acquisitions?

I've never regretted anything I sold off, because I'm usually 100 sure when I know I won't miss something. I've missed out on stuff that I regretted not picking up when I saw them, though. The Gall Force Collection from CPM is one example. I regret not picking up Gaogaigar box 2 from MediaBlasters and now it's out of print. I also passed up on getting the Crusher Joe DVD collection I saw sitting around in a video store for less than 10 for WEEKS way back in the early 2000s.

Oh, man! And to think of how expensive Crusher Joe goes for these days! A permanent hole I have are those final two volumes of Aura Battler Dunbine from ADV. Those are too rare and expensive, so I felt no qualms about obtaining the .mkv files for those in order to finish watching the series.
So is Gall Force on DVD expensive these days? I own the original series on LD, so the DVDs I'd bought for cheap I gave to my friend before moving back to Japan 4 years ago.

Gall Force is definitely quite expensive. The boxset that CPM put out costs around 200 on the ebay market, and the single DVDs go for about 50 a pop. The ones that weren't included in the set, like the Earth Chapter DVDs, cost even more. Worst thing is that Aniplex seemingly has the rights to the Gall Force saga and Aniplex isn't in the habit of letting other companies release their stuff for cheaper than they would release it.

Because I had to sell off my ENTIRE anime collection, I do have some seller's regret. Yet, I am glad I sold some of the stuff. There was a lot of anime I bought that was pretty lousy. I did not read any anime reviews before I made my purchases. I did a lot of guessing when purchasing and, I made plenty of bad calls. So when I sold off my collection in 2005 I knew what I did not want. Now the majority of my collection was really quality anime. I had a lot of good titles in my old collection.
The titles I NEVER replaced from the old collection
Angel Cop perfect collection
Perfect Blue
Windaria
All the Miyazaki Studio Ghibli films
Slayers the first collection
Love Hina collection
Ah my Goddess collection
Tenchi collection
Video Girl Ai
Golgo 13
Gunsmith Cats
Galaxy Express 999
Captain Harlock
Irresponsible Captain Tylor
Akira
Appleseed
Robotech Series
Devil City Shinjuku
Wrath of the Ninja
All of the Urusei Yatsura movies
Grave of the Fireflies
Green Legend Ran
Roroni Kenshin collection
Cowboy Bebop Collection
Excel Saga collection
Petshop of Horrors
Fist of the Northstar
Nadia The secret of blue water
Here is Greenwood series I also had a LD of this series
Lodoss War collection
Fushigi yugi collection
City Hunter
Martian Successor Nadesco
This list is what I can easily remember I no longer own and have not replaced. I know the loss list is a longer because I had a lot of other titles I was starting to collect, but I never came close to completing. I was starting to collect Sailor Moon, Ranma 1 2, and Votoms. Some of the titles I collected just to own the entire collection. This list also does not include the Hentai titles I owned that I REFUSE to replace for conscience sake.
Now my old collection did include a lot to action movies, dramas, and scifi. I never replaced my Forrest Gump or While You Were Sleeping either. The loss list for the non anime titles may even be longer due to the lower cost and higher availability of the films. I digress. Let talk about the manga in the old collection.
Anything by Rumiko Takahashi I owned was VERY well read. I threw most of those trades away because of overuse and abuse. The Maison Ikkoku trade did better because I had the original trades put aside and read the thick compilations instead. Yet the Lum trades got read and reread to death. I read in bed a lot and ended up sleeping on my trades. The vast majority of manga and comics that were sold in the old collections was stuff I did not read very often. I did have some treasures I let go.
Manga Loss List
Budda
Maison Ikkoku
Lum compiliations
Futabu Kun Change
Ah My Goddess
Banana Fish
Crying Freeman
...
I would go on but these lists are a lot longer that I first anticipated. The more I type the more I begin to remember what I had previously. It is a little depressing. Neon Genesis Evangelion
Mobile Suit Gundam
Dragon Ball Z
Vision of Escaflowne
Sailor Moon
Vandred
Bogie Pop Phantom
Someday Dreamer
etc.
I ran across a complete collection of Votoms but I forget where exactly. I know it was a 1 2 price Books outlet. I may have to pick that up. I know I am going to get that Crying Freeman Perfect collection I saw for sale this week. I would pick up that Kids on the Slope Blu Ray, but I got to replace my Blu ray player, PS3, first. I know that CD Japan has the COMPLETE compiliation of Revolution Girl Utena Soundtracks in on big ten CD box set for 100. I found the complete Budda series for 119 on ebay. Decisions. Decisions.

Re: The holes in your Anime and Manga Collection :
Owning physical copies of manga and anime never really appealed to me, however, I collect production artwork and am a big background collector. The nice thing about backgrounds is that they're almost always numbered with their episode number and then the scene s in which they were used.
I have a large collection of backgrounds from Cardcaptor Sakura and a much larger collection from Kobato. With the CCS backgrounds, those usually arrived one at a time and the majority are from one episode in particular, so I was able to keep a list of what I had and what I needed. On the other hand, the Kobato stuff arrived in large lots. Four years later and, while I have a pretty good idea as to what I have CCS wise, with the exception of my favorite Kobato episode, I really don't know what I have. I estimate I have about 500 backgrounds from Kobato and I've been seriously dragging my feet when it comes not only to scanning them, but cataloguing them as well.
Unlike CCS, most of the Kobato stuff has all been destroyed, so I have very little hope of adding any more. Madhouse burned all of their original paper sketches used to animate the series, so all that's largely left were the backgrounds and copy layouts that were scanned during production and often folded to fit inside small circular waste bins. The CCS backgrounds were sold on YJ during 2009-2012 and I, as well as many others, bid on them every week. But, at least with CCS, there's always the chance that a cel used originally with that background will pop up.
Either way, I blame all of this on the Panini stickers I used to collect as a child. Opening up packs to get the remaining few stickers I needed to complete the book made me a completionist.

These days rather than DVDs, I'm a lot more likely to buy a cel, or an old toy, or some kind of old collectible item.
Most of the DVDs I reviewed at Anime Jump back in the day have been sold off or given away, and apart from a confused 15 minutes looking for the DVD of Madox 01 I could have sworn I had around here somewhere, I don't miss any of them. Unless it's a film or a TV show I know I'm going to watch again and again, I don't feel I'm getting my money's worth in owning the physical media.
I do keep an eye out for the few volumes we need to complete Shain's Maison Ikkoku manga set, that's one of the things I'm looking out for. I wanna get that BD of Castle Cagliostro, that would be cool to have, and it's a film I haven't seen in a long time.
I don't have a big pile of regret about shows I failed to pick up because, let's face it, the American anime industry spent most of its time importing shows and movies I had zero interest in. Only recently have they been releasing titles I would actually spend money on. Most of my 'wish list' shows like Rose Of Versailles, Dirty Pair, etc., finally got licensed over here and when they did, I grabbed 'em. Heck, next year Discotek is coming out with Giant Gorg. Now THAT'S a show I'd regret passing up!

Re: The holes in your Anime and Manga Collection :
Dave I know how you feel about owing some physical copies of anime. My collection now is a lot more focused on things that are out of print or films I will watch over and over again. I have CD soundtracks and a few figures now. My second collection has a few signed copies of manga or number ones that were hold overs from the first collections. So, my first collection only almost completely disappeared.
Anime is very cheap now. I have Super Amazing Value Editions of many titles including
Welcome to the NHK
Wallflower
Shiki
Suzuka
Le chadlier
etc.
I found the crying Freeman collection for 29 dollars at Barnes and Noble bookstore. That is not to mention all the collections that become available for sale at store that sell the anime for cheap. I got my uruesi Yatsura DVD box sets for 10 a piece at a book store. I 25 out of print DVD'S for just two dollars a piece. I really got over on that deal. So if you got the storage space now. Just sit like back and wait for the chance to get quality stuff for little on nothing.
Now I have been investing in other things whileam exploiting the low prices of anime. I been taking shop classes at the community college and upgrading my musical instruments. Also, I have been upgrading my tool collection and building my credit. Cheap anime make life a lot easier. I have not even watched most of the new stuff I have been picking up. Hey, I got a huge storage unit to fill.

Re: The holes in your Anime and Manga Collection :
When I think of holes in my collection, I think mostly about DVD or manga sets that are incomplete. Like most, normal people, I only have a couple volumes of Aura Battler Dunbine and Kodocha would like to get completed sets for those. On my manga shelf, since I am a big Adachi Mitsuru fan, I have a lot of series started but nothing finished.
The caveat is that I have cut back significantly on the stuff I've been buying for my collection, too. What I would really like to do is try to sell donate give away most of my DVD singles or thin tankouban if they can be replaced with bricks or wider versions. But I am also in agreement with what some others on the thread have said about really only getting into media that really interests them and has a lot of re-watch value.
The holes in your Anime and Manga Collection :

At least that is what I think However, I am missing some titles that I previously owned as well as collections that I started and did not complete.

The biggest holes in my collection, without a doubt, are DVDs for Kimagure Orange Road and Neon Genesis Evangelion. Even though I do have some tapes of these shows, I regret passing up on the DVDs when they were more affordable.
