Re: Finally understanding "Big Eyes, Small Mouth" designs
Sorry to double-post - I meant to add that the game Big Eye Small Mouth (BESM) noticed this trend in a lot of anime around that time (the 80s), thus coining the phrase to title their anime roleplaying game.

Re: Finally understanding "Big Eyes, Small Mouth" designs
Yes, this design ascetic has been around anime for quite some time. The phrase "big eye small mouth" comes from a table top roleplaying game that acted as a proxy for anime fans, the way that say Shadowrun was a proxy for cyberpunk fans.mbanu wrote:Was this always a thing, and I'm just now realizing it?

Re: Oldschool OVAs You Wish Were Completed
One that I started thinking of when I first saw the thread title was One Pound Gospel . Takahashi wrote a couple volumes worth in the mid-80s and a single episode OAV was made based on it. However, she came back to it in the early 2000s, wrote two more volumes' worth to conclude the story. Having a ...

Re: Question About Tai Seng Video Marketing
All in all, a REALLY weird curiosity that didn't have much impact. It did answer one question I've been confused about though...this bit of info was passed around as fact for a LONG time: This movie is called "Dragon's Pearl." It was renamed & rereleased after the anime became popular in America. I...

Re: Other Japanese cultural imports?
there was a big "nostalgia craze" in the late 1960s and early 1970s as members of the "baby boom" generation became adults and started becoming nostalgic for things they enjoyed as children. 1950s rock and roll, sitcoms like "I Love Lucy," horror movies and film noir movies and gangster movies, and...

Organizing Your Media And Merch
I tried looking for older/existing threads and couldn't find anything on this specific topic. I am wondering what others here on the forum are doing to organize their media collections? Felt like this was the better heading since it could apply to all merch but I am specifically looking for how folk...

Re: Your favorite sport manga
Yeah, Drew_Sutton, sadly those 2 vols were all Viz put out. I wish they'd consider reprinting them, those were excellent short story collections, even if we didn't get all of them. Ah, I was worried that was the case. I was just thinking tonight though, the anime for MIX is streaming, I'm curious w...

Re: What are you Watching?
If your laptop (I think you mentioned laptop recently) has HDMI, you can connect to your TV that way. I've done it a few times for some very specific things I am trying to stream. nope, no hdmi outlet. My laptop is a thinkpad from 2011-ish. I guess there are adapters, but I don't need it THAT much....
