Re: How did Hentai made its way to America?

I vaguely remember one company advertising actually getting porn stars to dub some of their hentai....no idea if it was anyone worth note, or if they were any good at it lol. Haha, I had forgotten about that until you mentioned it! I searched because I couldn't remember much more than what you did ...

Re: How did Hentai made its way to America?

(On a related question, I have seen in films set in the 1980s America roadside motels that openly promoted they they had porn to show. Was this a thing?) There still adult stores here and there. There is one for example in between Charlotte NC and Greenville SC on I-85 that only has a billboard up ...

Re: 1987 catalog of dreams and VHS tapes

There's some old Laser Perceptions ads in ANIMAG that had prices listed for what they were offering at the time, and one movie, say Crystal Triangle, they wanted $120 for it on LD. I don't think 120 pesos is worth owing Crystal Triangle, then again I did drop money on a VHS copy recently, so I will...

Re: 1987 catalog of dreams and VHS tapes

Very cool as always. Question about the LD prices - I always figured that LD was a "premier" format but nearly everything in their catalog, the LD was cheaper than tape. Was that common then, and LD prices went up in the 90s, or were LDs always cheaper but just never caught on for one reason or anot...

Re: How did Hentai made its way to America?

found some images of the VHS box art of an early American hentai release: Gonad-the-Barbarian-The-Search-for-Uranus-very.jpg Haha, holy crap - I never knew these things were that old... One of my college friends had one of these tapes (I think it even made a really early Akihabara Renditions appear...

Re: The first instance of sharing anime online

I'm pretty sure there was a window of time in which people would download a fansub and then transfer it to VHS for the club library or to screen at meetings. VHS was the format you could pretty much assume everybody was going to have access to up until 2002-2004 or so. A lot of times DVDs that had ...

Re: The first instance of sharing anime online

Meant to add on my last post - I was still trading & acquiring non-commercial copies of anime titles on VHS up until about 2002 or so; it was still the easiest way for the average nerd to take a piece of video, duplicate it as needed, and take it anywhere and show it to others. There was a point, ar...

Re: The first instance of sharing anime online

I'm not any kind of video game person, but I remember the serious PC gamers having "LAN parties" - everybody would bring their own PCs to somebody's house, they'd network them together, and they'd play games that way. Of course, internet service still is different depending on who your provider is,...

Re: Hello. I really miss bulletin boards.

Welcome! Twitter and some vintage anime Facebook groups have some great content but they don't replace good-old bulletin boards and forum communities. Glad to have you around and looking forward to posting with you!

Re: The first instance of sharing anime online

I had been downloading clips of anime, specifically Dragonball Z and a few Sailormoon files, as early as probably 1997. These were usually a few minutes long, usually no longer than 5 minutes. None of it was subbed. I think the first full anime episode I'd heard about someone downloading [/i] was pr...
