Let's Anime: Anime North 1997

I pestered some people who were at the first Anime North to tell me all about it, and this is the result - all about the first Anime North 25 years ago, back in 1997!

Re: Prominance of Beta in Anime Tape Trading

in my anime nerd circles in the 80s and early 90s Beta was seen as the superior format - the tapes were 3 hours long at "SP" mode, and technically the image was better than VHS. But here in North America, more people had VHS. Tape trading was mostly a VHS situation. I wound up buying a pre...

Re: C/FO's 45th anniversary?

there definitely was a sorting-out that happened at some point, as the "general animation" fans and the "Japanese animation" fans went their separate ways. I'd say once Robotech hit TV there was no going back; the comics and books and magazines afterwards were very distinct in se...

Re: C/FO's 45th anniversary?

It kind of says something about the C/FO's legacy to consider that when that first wave of uncut, subtitled anime hit American video stores in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the C/FO had almost nothing to do with it. None of the companies that localized anime - CPM/USMC, AnimEigo, the Right Stuf., ...

Re: C/FO's 45th anniversary?

the C/FO is certainly part of the anime fandom scene of the time, but it wasn't the only club. There are plenty of anime fans still alive from the late 1970s and the 1980s who accomplished interesting and influential things in the fandom and who were never part of the C/FO. For many people it was me...

Re: The 1976 New York Star Trek Convention aka DisasterCon

the 1970s were before home video, but Star Trek was re-run in local TV markets over and over and over again. Episodes were in syndication pretty much throughout the United States. Fans of the show could catch their favorites, the curious could watch it and find out for themselves what the fuss was a...

Re: Can anyone please help my article on the fall of C/FO?

just wanted to add, in answer to a question you asked in the comments on that Reddit post - that it's my understanding Be Forever Yamato was screened at the Yamato-Con event in Dallas in 1983. The Roman Album for that film was sold at American comic book stores and fan conventions in that time perio...

Re: The 1976 New York Star Trek Convention aka DisasterCon

That's a really deep dive on a long-ago convention! Must have been difficult researching a lot of that material. As a former con organizer, I definitely sympathize with the desire to lock one's self into a hotel room and hide from the convention chaos. In that situation the sense of panic and parano...

Re: Another Let's Anime blog?

There are a lot of abandoned Blogspot blogs out there that get taken over by spam-bots that post weird strings of keywords designed to attract clicks - I think back in the 2000-2010 time period it might have been possible to make a little money directing traffic towards ad sites that way. I still ge...
