The roughly mid-90's and earlier (generally pre-Toonami, pre-anime boom) era of anime & manga fandom: early cons, clubs, tape trading, Nth Generation VHS fansubs, old magazines & fanzines, fandubs, ancient merchandise, rec.arts.anime, and more!
Oh gosh, that reminds me! The old Anime Archive BBS had some great colored ASCII art (or was that called ANSI?) for its login screens. I think they were randomized.

My favorite one was Madoka from KOR. That was used on the title screen of the Anime Archive BBS, drawn by a guy named Fred von Graf, IIRC. Looking up that name on search engines doesn't find anything. Actually, looking up ANSI art on search engines does not really result in anything because unfortunately, it's a DOS driven thing. I can't remember exactly, but not even Telnet could produce the colored ANSI art.
I haven't done a completely thorough search yet, but ansi art does indeed seem to be rare. It would be nice if we could a hold of some and stick them up on AnimePast. Maybe some ex-sysops still have their old stuff...
